ATHENS, W.Va. - The Concord University men's soccer team kicks off the season with a pair of games in Murfreesboro, North Carolina this weekend. The first is a neutral site affair against Virginia State on Thursday and the second is a road tilt with Chowan Saturday.

THE WAIT IS OVER
The Mountain Lions lace up their boots for the first time in 284 days, in what was their second straight MEC Championship Game defeat at the hands of the Charleston Golden Eagles. Concord enjoyed plenty of success in 2025, boasting a 13-4-3 overall record and climbing as high as the number 10 ranked team in NCAA Division II. The Mountain Lions were led by the program's first ever All-American, Malher Santi Possu in the 2025 campaign. Possu tallied 13 goals and four assists for a combined 30 points in a dominant season for the forward.Â
FRIENDLY FACES
While Concord has plenty of new players entering the squad, eyes shift up front to the senior French forward, Dominique Malhomme. In his first season in the Maroon and Gray, Malhomme impressed with six goals and 14 points, which both rank second for CU. With Possu's departure to Division I Florida International University, Malhomme will look to take another leap forward in his senior season. The program also returns a steady force in the back line, senior defender Zakari Messam. Messam was an anchor for the Mountain Lions, starting in 18 of 19 games and rarely leaving the pitch.
ONE OF A KIND STYLE
Concord men's soccer under fourth year head coach, Alex Smith, has featured set piece brilliance by the Mountain Lions. They constantly put the opposing team under pressure with a barrage of free kicks, corners (97), throw-ins and penalty kicks (6-7). Smith recruited more big bodies up to Athens this season, so don't expect this style to go by the wayside. CU was second in the MEC in corner kicks and first in penalty kicks scored.Â
HOT START
The Mountain Lions ripped off four straight wins to start their 2025 season, including a 5-2 drumming of Chowan in the season opener. Malhomme and senior midfielder Daniel Rivers both had assists in the game. The result saw Concord jump into the national poll, all the way up at the number 10 spot. CU will look for a similar run of good form at the beginning of the season to kickstart its season the right way.
SCOUTING THE VIRGINIA STATE TROJANS
Virginia State enters year three of its men's soccer program after a 2-9-3 run in 2025. While struggling a bit, the Trojans return their top two returning scorers, Sebastine Daniel and Diddier Rochez who each netted five goals a season ago.Â
SCOUTING THE CHOWAN HAWKS
Chowan came up just short in the Conference Carolinas Championship game against Young Harris, but still had a great 2025 season. The Hawks went 10-4-4 behind 15 goals from freshman phenom, Cameron Letterlough who's now at NC State. While Chowan will have to replace some major production, they've posted a winning record each of the last three seasons.
