CHARLESTON, W.Va. – The Concord University baseball team had its season ended by Charleston in the Mountain East Conference Tournament Saturday afternoon, falling 5-2, at GoMart Ballpark.
The Mountain Lions (26-27) jumped on Charleston (23-29) with two runs in the top of the first inning. After a leadoff walk to junior infielder
Nick DiSanti to begin the game, senior outfielder
Dawson Gragg sliced a ball into left center field that bounded over the centerfielder's head and allowed DiSanti to score from first. Later in the inning, Gragg crossed home plate on an RBI single by freshman outfielder
Lucas Cannon.
Charleston tied the game in the bottom of the second inning, but graduate pitcher
Rylee Nicholas settled in and retired six of the next seven batters including picking up his only strikeout of the game to start the fourth inning.
In the fifth, it appeared Concord may take control of the game as it loaded the bases with three straight walks to begin the frame. However, a double play—that included an out at home—and a strikeout ended the promising inning for the Maroon and Gray.
It was UC that took the game's next lead with a run in the bottom of the fifth, and the Golden Eagles added two runs in the seventh. In the eighth inning, Concord put a pair of runners on base after back-to-back singles from senior catcher
Austin Hear and senior infielder
Sam Stowe, but CU could not convert the chance.
Hear had two of the seven hits for the Mountain Lions in the game, including his sixth double of the year. Cannon had CU's only RBI of the game.
Nicholas (1-2) was the pitcher of record as he tossed 4.1 innings. He allowed three runs (two earned) on five hits.
