CHARLESTON, W.Va. – The Concord University baseball team lost 6-5 to Point Park in the first game of the Mountain East Conference Tournament Wednesday night at GoMart Ballpark.
Point Park (30-20) got a run across in the top of the ninth that proved to the difference in the game. Â
The game was deadlocked at zeros until the top of the fourth when PPU hit a solo home run. The Mountain Lions (25-26) broke through just an inning later when senior infielder
Tyson Burke launched his second home run of the season, a two-run shot to left field.
Behind excellent pitching from freshman
Jonah Adams, Concord stayed in the lead, and even tacked on a run in the bottom of the seventh as junior infielder
Nick DiSanti drew a bases-loaded walk to plate freshman outfielder
Jared Lavergne.
However, CU stranded the bases loaded as it was unable to pad the 3-1 lead.
Point Park plated four runs in the top of the eighth to overtake the Mountain Lions. But, Concord did not waste any time tying the game. Back-to-back singles from senior outfielder
Korbin Bostic and freshman outfielder
Lucas Cannon put the tying run on base. Both moved up on a wild pitch, and were brought in by Lavergne who cracked a two-run double to the left center field gap.
The Pioneers scratched across a run in the top of the ninth on a pair of hits.
Lavergne was at the top of the offensive production for the Mountain Lions. He was 3-for-4 with a double and two RBI. Senior infielder
Sam Stowe was 2-for-2 with a pair of walks. Burke drove in a pair of runs on his home runs.
Adams started the eighth inning on the mound as he was credited with 7.0 innings pitched, allowing four runs on eight hits. He struck out. Junior pitcher
Ryder Wagenknecht (1-1) was the pitcher of record otu of the bullpen.Â
