GLENVILLE, W.Va. – The Concord University baseball team won its final two regular season games of the season, defeating Glenville State 3-0 and 5-0 Sunday afternoon in Mountain East Conference South Division play at Kenny Greenlief Field at the Sue Morris Complex.
With the pair of victories, the Mountain Lions (25-26, 19-11 MEC) win the MEC South Division by a game over Charleston. It is CU's first MEC South Division title since 2017.
Game 1: Concord 3 – Glenville State 0
Dominant pitching headlined the doubleheader as senior pitcher
Logan Darrow rolled through the GSU (27-21, 16-14 MEC) lineup on his way to a two-hit shutout.
The Concord bats provided enough offense to back up Darrow's masterpiece on the mound.
In the third, senior outfielder
Dawson Gragg steered a double fair inside the third base bag that brought in senior catcher
Austin Hear after he and junior infielder
Nick DiSanti had back-to-back singles to leadoff the inning.
Hear was in the middle of the scoring in the fifth inning as he reached on an error that allowed senior infielder
Sam Stowe to move to third base after he lined a base hit to center field to begin the frame. Stowe would later score on a double play.
As for Darrow, he allowed two of the first batters of the game to reach before settling in. Darrow proceeded to retired 11 of the next 12 GSU hitters before a two-out double in the fourth inning broke up a potential no-hit bid. A leadoff walk in the fifth inning was erased on a caught stealing, and then Darrow retired Glenville State in order in the sixth and steadied around a one-out infield single in the seventh to cap his afternoon.
He improved to 5-2 on the mound as he allowed two hits and issued three walks while striking out five. It was Darrow's first career complete-game shutout.
Freshman outfielder Jared Laverge was responsible for an opposite field double to left in the sixth that brought in senior outfielder
Korbin Bostic to back up Darrow.
Stowe was 2-for-3 with a run scored. Hear reached base three times—a hit, a walk and an error.
Game 2: Concord 5 – Glenville State 0
Graduate pitcher
Rylee Nicholas picked up where Darrow left off as he blanked Glenville State in the nightcap to help the Mountain Lions clinch the division title.
Nicholas matched zeros with GSU's Ashton Crace through four innings as CU broke the deadlock in the fifth inning. Consecutive walks to Lavergne and Hear set the stage for Concord to manufacture a run in the fifth.
A fielder's choice put runners at the corners before a sacrifice fly by Stowe put the first run on the board. The Mountain Lions needed just one swing to double the lead in the sixth inning as Gragg smacked his fifth home run of the season to take the lead to 2-0.
It was more than enough run support for Nicholas who also collected his first career complete-game shutout. Nicholas scattered six hits as he only had two Pioneers on base in the same inning once—the first. Of the six hits, five were singles. Nicholas grabbed his first win of the year (1-1) as he finished one strikeout shy of his career with nine punchouts on the day.
Up 2-0, Concord's offense put the game out of reach in the seventh. Senior infielder
Tyson Burke came up with a sacrifice fly to bring across Lavergne. An error at shortstop allowed two runners, Hear and Stowe, to score.
Gragg was 2-for-4 with the home run. Lavergne reached base twice on a 1-for-2 day with a walk. He scored twice.
Sunday marked the first time that Concord posted back-to-back shutouts since April 13, 2014 against Wheeling in a doubleheader.
The Mountain Lions begin MEC Tournament play 7:00 p.m. Wednesday against Point Park at GoMart Ballpark in Charleston, West Virginia. It is a rematch of last year's MEC Tournament opener.
