Concord Clipped in Doubleheader at Fairmont State

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The Concord University baseball team was defeated in a pair of tight games by Fairmont State Sunday afternoon in Mountain East Conference action at Dale Miller Field at Mylan Park.

The scores were 6-4 and 4-3.

Game 1: Fairmont State 6 – Concord 4
Despite falling in an early 3-0 hole, the Mountain Lions (6-14, 1-3 MEC) battled back throughout the game.

Fairmont State (9-6, 3-1 MEC) plated three runs in the bottom of the first inning as CU found the scoreboard for the first time in top of the third. Senior infielder Sam Stowe came around to score after a leadoff walk.

FSU answered with a run bottom of the third, but Stowe was in the middle of the scoring in the top of the fourth as the Mountain Lions got to within 4-2. After back-to-back hit by pitches to start the inning, Stowe brought in senior outfielder Korbin Bostic with an RBI double.

CU scored for a third straight inning in the fifth as senior outfielder Dawson Gragg touched home on an RBI single by freshman outfielder Jared Lavergne, cutting the deficit to 4-3.

However, Fairmont State restored a 6-3 advantage in the bottom of the fifth.

Stowe provided an RBI single in the top of the sixth as senior infielder Tyson Burke scored with two outs in the frame. The two-run margin was as close as Concord would get.

Stowe was 2-for-2 with two RBI and a double. Lavergne collected two hits and an RBI. Gragg was 1-for-2 with an RBI and was on base twice.

Freshman pitcher Jonah Adams (0-5) was hit with the loss as he tossed 4.1 innings.

Game 2: Fairmont State 4 – Concord 3
The Mountain Lions were clipped in the second game of the day as Fairmont State plated the eventual game-winning run in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Both teams jumped out early as the sides traded runs in the first inning. CU's run came when junior infielder Nick DiSanti got caught in a rundown that allowed senior infielder Matthew DiSanti to score.

The Concord offense went right back to work in the second inning as it loaded the bases with two outs. M. DiSanti provided the only hit in the inning, a two-run single to push CU ahead 3-1.

FSU matched the two runs in the bottom of the second, and the game remained tied at 3-3 until the bottom of the fifth.

Graduate pitcher Joseph Hastings worked around a two-on, one-out situation in the third to keep the game tied. Right after, the Mountain Lions left the bases loaded with two outs in the top of the fourth.

Down 4-3 into the seventh inning, N. DiSanti and Levergne were able to get into scoring position, but Concord was unable to tie or take the lead.

M. DiSanti went 2-for-2 with two RBI and a stolen base.

Burke reached base twice on a pair of walks.

Hastings tossed three innings as he allowed two runs and struck out two. Freshman pitcher Elijah Green (0-1) fired 2.1 innings of relief as he was dealt a tough loss.

CU opens up a four-game weekend homestand 1:00 p.m. Saturday against Salem.
