BLUEFIELD, W.Va. – The Concord University men's basketball team was defeated 83-77 Monday night in a non-conference rivalry game at Ned Shott Gymnasium.
Down 40-33 at halftime, the Mountain Lions (10-9) chased the lead throughout the second half as BSU (9-12) went up as much as 10 points in the first four minutes after the intermission. CU clipped off nine of the next 10 points as junior forward
Anfernee Hanna hit two foul shots to get Concord within 47-45 at the 13:31 mark of the second half.
Bluefield State held off the Mountain Lions as it took a 56-48 lead with 9:16 left. The lead grew to as much as 10 points once again, 60-50. But, the next six points belonged to Concord. Senior guard
Savier McCall made a layup right before the final media timeout cut the deficit to 60-56.
Still trailing 66-56 at the 3:48 mark, CU had one last run as it got as close as four points before the final margin of six.
The first half featured five ties and five lead changes as Concord held the lead for just under nine minutes. But, the largest advantage the Mountain Lions could build was a 23-19 lead at the 7:53 mark of the first half after a layup from Hanna. Just under two minutes later, Hanna converted an old-school, three-point play as Concord took a 26-24 edge.
However, Bluefield State went on a 10-0 run to take a 34-26 advantage before a foul line jumper by freshman guard
Micah Young ended the spurt. Young had a crucial bucket for CU just ahead of the halftime horn as the Mountain Lions went into the locker trailing by seven points, 40-33.
Young scored 21 of his 25 points in the second half—his performance was spurred by a 9-for-9 showing at the foul line. Hanna was steady in scoring 20 points. Sophomore guard
Josiah Rickards netted 10 of his 13 points before halftime.
Junior forward
Eldon Terry added five points and 10 rebounds. McCall just missed double figures with eight points.
Concord finished the night 23-for-26 at the foul as Hanna and Young combined to go 18-for-19.
CU plays its final non-conference game of the season 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Salem as the Maroon and Gray concludes a three-game road trip.
