Concord Outpaced at UVa.-Wise

WISE, Va. - The Concord University baseball team fell 18-8 in a high-scoring non-conference game against UVa.-Wise Wednesday afternoon at Stallard Field.

Concord (1-4) got their bats going on the road but couldn't stifle the UVa.Wise (2-1) offense.

The Mountain Lions got hot early, getting back-to-back singles from senior catcher Kaden Swaim and junior infielder Nick DiSanti in the first inning. Senior infielder Sam Stowe followed as he drove a two-out double to center field to plate both runners.

The scoring continued two batters later as senior catcher Austin Hear ripped a double down the left field line to score both Stowe and junior utility Hunter Sipel. Concord took a 4-0 lead heading into the bottom of the first inning.

Wise tallied six straight runs over the next two innings to take a 6-4 advantage.

CU's offense got back to work in the top of the third inning. With two outs, Hear and Sipel drew walks to bring up redshirt sophomore outfielder Atticus Goodson who proceeded to smash his first home run in the Maroon and Gray to deep center field, giving Concord a 7-6 lead.

The scoring stopped until the fifth inning, when the Cavaliers posted four runs to jump out to a 10-7 edge.

In the top of the sixth, the Mountain Lions loaded the bases with two outs. Stowe walked to bring in another run, but it was as close as CU would get.

UVa.-Wise pushed across eight runs in its final two at-bats.

N. DiSanti led Concord with three hits, including a double. Stowe drove in three runs in the contest. Goodson launched his first homer with Concord to also collect three RBI. Hear and senior infielder Tyson Burke each notched two-hit days.

Senior pitcher Logan Darrow (0-1) was hit with the loss. He went three innings, allowed four runs (one earned) and struck out two.

The Mountain Lions prepare to take on Bluefield State next Wednesday in a doubleheader at Anderson Field starting at 12:00 p.m.
