ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University volleyball team picked up its 20
th win of the season as it defeated Shawnee State on Senior Night inside the Carter Center Thursday in a Mountain East Conference South Division match.
After dropping the first set, 25-22, the Mountain Lions took the next three sets, 25-20, 25-23, 25-15.
The Mountain Lions (20-10, 12-4 MEC) shook off a first set that they controlled before SSU (9-19, 4-12) won six straight points to go up 1-0.
In the second set, CU was only tied with Shawnee State four times in the early going before four straight points allowed Concord to open up a 16-12 edge. Each time the Bears got within striking distance, the Mountain Lions answered, including a solo block by senior middle hitter
Jasmine Anderson and a kill from sophomore middle hitter
Addie Adkins to push the lead back to four points, 23-19, as CU went on to even the match.
Concord won the important third set even though it cooled off from its .357 hitting percentage in the second set. The Mountain Lions erased an early 7-3 deficit by going on a 7-2 run that ended with an Anderson kill. SSU, though, did not go away as the Bears grabbed a 17-16 edge. Concord answered right back with five consecutive points to gain the breathing room it needed to take a 2-1 lead. Included in the late spurt were two kills by junior right side
Maddie Stull.
Another early run by CU in the fourth set pushed Concord to the brink of its 20
th win and its 12
th win inside the Carter Center this fall. Seven straight points gave the Maroon and Gray an 11-7 advantage. CU led by at least three points the rest of the way, including ripping off a 9-4 run to end the match.
Concord ends the season with a 12-1 home record, and the 20
th win of the season marks the first time since the 2001 and 2002 seasons that the Mountain Lions have won 20 matches in back-to-back years.
Stull finished one kill shy of her season high with 14. Three other Mountain Lions: Adkins (12), Anderson (10) and senior outside hitter
Chloe Thompson (10) finished with double-digit kills.
Seven of Thompson's 10 kills came in the fourth set as she finished with a double-double of 10 kills and 12 digs. Senior setter
Paige Richmond just missed her own double-double with 29 assists and eight digs.
Senior libero
Allie Davis recorded 22 digs. And junior defensive specialist
Camille Testerman came up with 10 crucial digs.
Senior setter Savannah Davila notched 17 assists.
