Concord Grinds Out Straight Sets Win over Point Park

ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University volleyball team outlasted Point Park as CU picked up a sweep Friday night in a Mountain East Conference game at the Carter Center.

The set scores were 28-26, 25-23, 25-23.

The Mountain Lions (14-7, 6-1 MEC) had to rally in the first set to go up 1-0. With the set tied at 19-19, Concord watched Point Park (5-12, 2-5 MEC) go on a 5-1 run to get the first game to set point.
However, CU clawed back as it used to a solo block from senior middle hitter Jasmine Anderson and a kill from senior outside hitter Meg Williams to tie the set. Concord again faced set point at 25-24, but a second set point for Concord was clinched after a PPU attacked error.

The second set featured nine ties, but only three lead changes. The Mountain Lions went up 21-19 late in the set after another error by the Pioneers, but then needed a kill each from freshman middle hitter Mariah Moss and Williams in two of the last three points to seal the set.

It appeared as though CU would pull away from the Pioneers in the third set as it went up 19-14 after a solo block from Williams. Point Park, though, responded with five straight points to level the game at 19-19, and from there neither team went up by more than two points. With the set even at 23-23, Concord watched Point Park commit a setting error before Anderson and Stull combined on a block to lock up CU's fourth straight sweep.

Point Park had one more kill than Concord, 42-41, but the Maroon and Gray forced PPU into 29 errors, including 13 blocks. Anderson and sophomore middle hitter Addie Adkins each had six blocks as three of Anderson's were solo. Senior libero Allie Davis added to the defensive effort with 15 digs.

Senior setter Paige Richmond recorded her second double-double of the year with 17 assists and 10 digs.

Williams led the offense with 12 kills with Stull (nine) and Adkins (eight) combining for 17 kills.

The Mountain Lions welcome Davis & Elkins to the Carter Center 1:00 p.m. Saturday.
