Concord Defeats Glenville State on Homecoming, 34-31

ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University football team held off Glenville State for a 34-31 win Saturday afternoon in a Mountain East Conference at Callaghan Stadium.

The Mountain Lions (5-2, 3-2 MEC) won their first Homecoming game since 2021, and just the third since 2015.

Clinging to a 27-24 lead early in the fourth quarter, CU needed just five plays to go 65 yards and restore a 34-24 advantage. Sophomore running back Jayden Williams ripped off runs of 15 and 16 yards to start the drive, then two plays later junior running back Greg Burrell hauled in a 32-yard pass to set up his second rushing touchdown of the day, a two-yard tote.

Still up 34-24 with 4:49 remaining, Concord watched Glenville State (1-6, 0-4 MEC) drive 90 yards in just over two minutes to get within 34-31. CU was unable to drain the final 2:41 of the clock, and turned the ball over on down after a failed fourth down at the 44-yard line.

GSU was able to get one first down, but on 2nd-and-10 from Concord 32-yard line, sophomore defensive back Berlin Campfort came down with his second interception in as many games with a pick at the one-yard line with 1:19 left.

The teams traded scores early in the contest as Concord led 20-10 at halftime on the strength of two short field goals from freshman kicker Christian Torres, and rushing touchdowns from Burrell and sophomore running back Curtis Clark.

CU scored in the final minute of the third quarter as sophomore wide receiver Dom Collins reeled in a three-yard score to push Concord ahead 27-16.

The Mountain Lions rolled up a season-high 247 yards rushing as they nearly had two 100-yard rushers. Clark turned in his second straight 100-yard game as he went for 109 yards on 11 carries and the first-half score. Williams finished 98 yards on 15 attempts. Burrell ran for 55 yards and two touchdowns.

Collins went over the century mark in receiving yards with eight catches for 109 yards and his team-best tenth touchdown. Graduate quarterback Devin Kargman passed for 272 yards and the touchdown to Collins.

The Maroon and Gray outgained the Pioneers, 519-384.

Concord limited Glenville State to 18 yards rushing, the fewest for an opponent since October 2015 versus UVa.-Wise. Campfort and senior linebacker Brodee Rice each finished with six tackles as Campfort added his second interception of the year. Two of three tackles for sophomore defensive end Joshua Smith were for loss.

The Mountain Lions hit the road to take on West Virginia State at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, October 24.
