Concord Edged by Nationally-Ranked Fairmont State

ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University women's soccer team came up just short against nationally-ranked, 21st-rated Fairmont State Sunday afternoon in a Mountain East Conference matchup at Callaghan Stadium, falling 2-1

Concord (3-8-2, 3-6-2 MEC) outshot Fairmont State (11-0-2, 9-0-2 MEC) 16-10 in the game, but was only able to find the back of the net in the 78th minute.

Sophomore defender Molly Watters scored for the fifth time in as many games, and for the sixth time overall this season. Sophomore midfielder Olivia Bartlett connected on a pass with sophomore midfielder Daisy Cook who then found Watters. From there, Watters lofted a shot from 25-yard away to the top right corner of the goal.

FSU scored with less than two minutes left in the first half, and added a second goal in the 60th minute. However, Watters' goal allowed the Mountain Lions to have chances down the stretch to even the game.

A corner kick clearance by the Fairmont State defense was played back in to the box in the 83rd minute, but senior defender Katie Garratt's attempt sailed high. In the 89th minute, junior forward Ailsa Swinburne was taken down just outside the penalty area, setting up a free kick for Garratt. Her initial shot was blocked while the second shot was pushed wide left of the goal.

Perhaps the best chance of the game for the Mountain Lions came on a counter attack.
After Fairmont State had a potential goal taken off the goal line by freshman defender Abigail Torman, and another hit the right post, freshman forward Ela Marit Del Orbe had her shot tipped over the bar by FSU's Olivia Johnston in the 14th minute.

Garratt led CU with four shots while Cook added three shots.

Junior goalkeeper Maddie Loughborough made three saves.
