Concord Loses at Frostburg State

FROSTBURG, Md.- The Concord University women's basketball team faltered in an 80-69 road defeat at Frostburg State Saturday afternoon in a Mountain East Conference game at Bobcat Arena.
The teams went back-and-forth in the first quarter as senior forward Olivia Ziolkowski scored the final six points of the period for the Mountain Lions (12-7, 8-4 MEC), but it was Frostburg State (10-10, 6-7 MEC) that took a 14-11 lead to the second quarter.

The Bobcats went on an 8-0 run to open the second quarter, extending their advantage to 11. FSU got the lead as high as 14 points, 34-20, but a 6-0 run over the final 2:22 of the first half reduced the margin down to eight at halftime.

At halftime, Frostburg State held a 34-26 lead. Ziolkowski had 10 points at the break while senior forward Abbie Smith had seven points and 10 boards.

A jumper by Smith got the Mountain Lions within 34-28 in the opening seconds of the third quarter. Frostburg State got momentum back later in the quarter, and built a 13-point lead with less than a minute left in the third. However, freshman guard Cadence Blackburn drained a deep three-pointer on a great outlet pass from junior guard Kiley Smich to beat the buzzer, cutting the lead to 10 with just the fourth quarter remaining.

The 10-point margin was the closest CU would get until the closing stages of the game.

Sophomore guard Kenyah Stubbs led the way with 22 points and five assists. Smith notched a double-double with 19 points to go with a season-best 18 rebounds and two blocks. Smith's first rebound of the game was the 1,000th of her career. She is the fourth player in program history with 1,000 career rebounds.

Ziolkowski finished with 10 points, all in the first half. Junior guard Alexis Frazee netted 10 points of the bench.

Concord hits the road for Salem Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. in the last non-conference game of the season.
