ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University men's basketball team lost 85-83 to Davis & Elkins Saturday afternoon in a Mountain East Conference game at the Carter Center.
Concord (9-4, 6-1 MEC) held a 76-71 lead with 2:55 remaining, but was unbale to close out Davis & Elkins. A tip-in by junior forward
Boubacar Djigo gave Concord a five-point advantage with less than three minutes to play, however, Concord watched D&E (6-8, 3-4 MEC) score eight of the next 10 points to go up 79-78 with 43 seconds remaining.
After a timeout, freshman guard
Micah Young restored a lead for CU with a short jumper on the left baseline. Davis & Elkins answered with a pair of free throws, and Concord was unable to respond with 12 seconds left.
The Senators went up 84-80 with 2.8 seconds left. The Mountain Lions launched a full-court pass, that ended with a three-pointer from junior forward
Anfernee Hanna with 0.7 seconds remaining. D&E made one free throw to win by two points.
Concord controlled the first half, leading by as much as nine points, but a late surge by Davis & Elkins knotted the game at 41-41 at halftime.
D&E continued that spurt to the start the second half by scoring the first two buckets after halftime. However, CU answered with a 13-0 run. Young started the run with a three-point play before sophomore forward
Kraig Gilbert scored six straight points. Hanna and Young closed the run with four straight free throws.
Still, Davis & Elkins refused to go away as they tied the game at 60-60 with 10:45 remaining.
The Mountain Lions came right back with seven straight points as Young's transition layup gave Concord a 67-60 lead with 8:49 left. Concord kept the lead until the late stages.
Hanna had a career day with 32 points, the first 30-point game for any CU player this season. He finished 10-for-12 from the floor, 3-of-3 from beyond the arc and 9-for-11 at the charity stripe. Young provided a career-high 19 points in 29 minutes off the bench.
Gilbert netted 14 points. Djigo just missed his 10
th double-double of the year with eight points and 13 rebounds.
Concord heads to Wheeling 7:30 p.m. Wednesday. Â
