Concord Rallies Past UVa.-Wise, 10-8

ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University baseball team scored the final seven runs of the game as it stormed back from a five-run deficit to defeat UVa.-Wise, 10-8, Wednesday afternoon in a non-conference tilt at Anderson Field.

Down 8-3 in the seventh inning, Concord (17-11) included closer to the Cavaliers (21-16) on a two-run home run by senior outfielder Demetri Jamison, his second long ball of the game.

Sophomore infielder Nick DiSanti led off the eighth inning and later scored on an RBI groundout. Now with the bases empty and one out, junior catcher Kaden Swaim reached by getting hit with a pitch for the second time in the game. Junior outfielder Korbin Bostic and junior catcher Austin Hear drew back-to-back walks, putting the go-ahead run on base.

The next batter, senior utility MJ Hunter, blasted the second pitch he saw in his at-bat over the left field fence for a grand slam, giving Concord its first lead of the game. It was Hunter's second home run of the season, and CU's first grand slam since last April 7 against Davis & Elkins.

Sophomore pitcher Jake Robinson walked the leadoff batter in the ninth, but proceeded to get three straight outs, including consecutive strikeouts to end the game, locking down his first save of the year.

Sophomore pitcher Mason Kisamore (1-0) pitched a scoreless inning of relief in the eighth to earn the win. In fact, Concord did not allow UVa.-Wise to score after the fourth inning. Freshman pitcher/outfielder Braylen Baker tossed 3.2 innings of scoreless relief as he surrendered just one base runner and struck out three.

Each team scored in its first three at-bats as the game was tied 3-3 after three innings before UVa.-Wise's five-run fourth. Hear singled in a run in the first and Jamison homered in the second before bringing in a run in the third on a base hit.

Jamison was 3-for-4 with four RBI and his first career multi-home run game. DiSanti was 3-for-5 and scored twice. Hear and Hunter each had two hits with Hunter driving in four on his grand slam.

The Mountain Lions open a four-game series with Davis & Elkins 1:00 p.m. Friday in a Mountain East Conference doubleheader.
