Concord Sweeps Doubleheader at Frostburg State, 10-3, 9-8

FROSTBURG, Md. – The Concord University softball team plated 19 combined runs, and picked up an extra-innings victory, in a road sweep of Mountain East Conference foe Frostburg State Monday afternoon at Bobcat Field.

With the pair of wins, the Mountain Lions improve to 18-23 on the season and 13-11 in MEC play while Frostburg State falls to 10-30 and 5-15 against the MEC.

Game One: Concord 10 – Frostburg State 3
CU jumped out to a 7-0 lead after three innings and never let Frostburg State back in the game.

Junior infielder Lacie Lewis and senior infielder Courtney Raines both reached base to start to the game. Then, junior pitcher/infielder Madison Hollis plated the first two runs on a one-out, two-RBI double into center field to jump in front 2-0.

After a pair of 1-2-3 innings from Hollis in the circle, the Maroon and Gray struck again in the third. Raines and senior first baseman/outfielder Kassidy Garvey led off the frame with a pair of base hits. In the following at-bat, Hollis drilled her second double of the game and gave Concord a 3-0 edge.

Then, with one out, junior catcher/utility Kayla Sholter plated another run on a sacrifice fly. Junior catcher/utility Gianna Sloan-Lebron kept the inning alive with an RBI base hit into left field, and junior outfielder Alina Giles followed with an RBI double down the right field line to expand the lead to 6-0. Junior catcher/utility Morgan Gleason capped off the offensive attack with a single through the left side that saw CU extend its lead to 7-0.

Hollis held the Bobcats scoreless until the sixth where CU countered three FSU runs with three runs of its own.

Concord answered right back in the top of the seventh, though, as the Mountain Lions plated three runs with two coming in on an RBI double from Lewis.

Hollis, Sholter, Giles, and Gleason each had multiple hits in the game with Hollis (three) and Lewis (two) driving in multiple runs. Hollis also improved to 7-4 in the circle by tossing a complete game, only surrendering three earned runs while striking out three. She did not give up a hit until a two-out single in the fifth.

Game Two: Concord 9 – Frostburg State 8 (Eight Innings)
After taking a 6-2 lead early on, the Mountain Lions needed extra innings to outlast Frostburg State for the sweep.

FSU tied the game 8-8 on a pair of runs in the seventh to force extras. Sloan-Lebron led off the eighth inning with a walk and stole second to represent the go-ahead run. With one away, Lewis delivered the game-winning RBI double down the left field line as Hollis closed out the game to earn her first career save.

The Bobcats jumped in front first with a pair of runs in the first, but CU responded quickly.

Freshman pitcher/outfielder Reghan Hintz reached on an error to begin the second inning and moved to second on a passed ball. Then, Giles poked a ball into center field that cut into the deficit, 2-1. With two outs, Gleason reached on an infield single to score Giles and knot the game.

Lewis kept her hot streak going, doubling to the opposite field and taking the lead, 3-2. The Mountain Lions weren't done, however, as Lewis came around to score on a wild pitch later in the inning and hold a 4-2 advantage.

Both teams were quiet until Raines stepped up with a two-RBI double in the top of the fourth and extended the lead to four, 6-2.

Frostburg State closed the gap to one run, 6-5, but CU would pile on more in the sixth. After a pair of base hits from Gleason and Lewis, Gleason swiped third and scored on an FSU error alongside Lewis to restore a three-run lead, 8-5.

Gleason and Lewis led the CU charge with three hits each. Gleason led the Maroon and Gray with five base hits during the doubleheader while Lewis had four total hits with three doubles and three RBI. Hintz (3-5) picked up the win after throwing 5.1 innings in relief while Hollis cleaned up the eighth inning only allowing one hit.

The Mountain Lions stay on the road to take on Point Park Friday starting at 3:00 p.m.
