Concord Drops Home Games to Charleston

ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University softball team was taken down by Charleston in a Mountain East Conference doubleheader at the CU Softball Field Friday afternoon.

After the twinbill, CU sits at 10-19 overall and 5-7 in the MEC while UC improves to 16-8 on the season and 8-4 against the MEC.

Game One: Charleston 12 – Concord 1
The Golden Eagles broke the scoring silence in the second inning on their way to a game one win.

Concord got base hits from sophomore infielder Kendall Morgan in the first inning and senior first baseman/outfielder Kassidy Garvey in the second inning, but were unable to plate any runs until the fourth.

Down 5-0 to start the frame, junior pitcher/infielder Madison Hollis led off with an infield single and was replaced by pinch runner sophomore outfielder Savannah Brehm. Then, freshman pitcher/outfielder Reghan Hintz moved Brehm into scoring position on a sacrifice. Junior catcher/utility Gianna Sloan-Lebron got the Mountain Lions on the board with a single up the middle to make the score, 5-1.

However, Charleston made a late surge in the seventh inning to win the first game.

Garvey was the only CU player to log multiple hits in the game for her first multi-hit performance of the season. Hollis (3-3) took the loss in the circle, tossing 115 pitches across all seven innings of action.

Game Two: Charleston 3 – Concord 1
After Charleston jumped in front 1-0 in the second, Concord tied the game in the fourth.

Hintz got the fourth inning started with her first career triple down the right field line to place the tying run 90 feet away with no outs. Then, Sloan-Lebron drove in her second run of the day on an RBI single into right field with one out.

Freshman pitcher/utility Mahailey Nicholson locked down the Golden Eagles' offense, only surrendering just one hit across the fifth and sixth innings.

Hollis got the bottom of the sixth started with a single through the left side to represent the go-ahead run. Then, Hintz reached on a fielder's choice and advanced to second on a groundout with two away.

But, the Mountain Lions were unable to get the go-ahead run across, sending the game to the seventh at 1-1. Charleston plated two runs in the top of the seventh, and held CU scoreless in the bottom half.

Garvey finished the doubleheader with three hits after entering the day with three hits for the season.. Raines went 2-for-3 in game two and Hintz supplied the Mountain Lions' only extra-base hit. Nicholson fell to 3-4 on the season, going the distance allowing three earned runs with a pair of strikeouts.

Concord faces West Virginia State at the CU Softball Field Saturday for a doubleheader starting at 12:00 p.m.
