ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University men's basketball team had a 96-78 setback against Glenville State Saturday afternoon in a Mountain East Conference contest at the Carter Center.
The Mountain Lions clinched the four seed in the MEC Tournament as they will face West Virginia State 8:30 p.m. Friday in the quarterfinal round at WesBanco Arena in Wheeling, West Virginia.
Despite shooting 62.9 percent in the second half, Concord (16-10, 13-7 MEC) was unable to overcome a 41-29 halftime deficit.
After back-to-back baskets from junior forward
Rene Diop to tie the game at 4-4, GSU (16-12, 10-10 MEC) took a 12-6 lead before freshman guard
Josiah Rickards answered with a three-pointer at the 13:32 mark of the first half.
However, Glenville State took off by scoring 11 of the next 14 points to go up 23-12 with 8:36 remaining.
A second Rickards' three-pointer trimmed the deficit to eight points, 27-19, but it was as close as the Mountain Lions would get for the remainder of the first half.
Senior guard
Corey Boston converted a layup with 18:07 remaining in the game to bring the margin within 10 points, and sophomore forward
Boubacar Djigo did the same with 17:31 left. However, Glenville State continued to apply the pressure on Concord as it won by 18 points.
Three Mountain Lions finished in double figures.
Redshirt freshman guard
Brendan Hoffman was 4-for-6 from the field in scoring 13 points off the bench. Saddled by foul trouble, Diop scored 10 points in 10 minutes. Rickards netted 10 points as well.
