CARY, N.C. – The Concord University baseball team lost a doubleheader, 9-1 and 11-4, to nationally-ranked East Stroudsburg Friday at the USA Baseball Training Complex.
Concord is 2-3 on the season while ESU begins the campaign at 2-0.
Game 1: #22 East Stroudsburg 9 – Concord 1
The Warriors scored five runs in their first three at-bats to break out to an early lead.
Down 2-0 in the bottom of the third inning, Concord got a pair of singles, a one-out knock from senior outfielder
D.J. Christian Jr. and a two-out base hit from junior catcher
Kaden Swaim. However, East Stroudsburg was able to escape the jam before plating three runs in the bottom half of the frame.
The next CU threat came in the fifth. Sophomore infielder
Nick DiSanti led off with a single before the bases were loaded on walks to junior infielder
Matthew DiSanti and Swaim with one out. But, the rally went by the wayside as ESU induced a double play.
The Mountain Lions avoided the shutout in the sixth as senior utility
MJ Hunter rounded the bases on an RBI single from senior infielder
AJ Strickland after he had led off the frame with a base hit.
M. DiSanti was 2-for-3 at the top of the order while also drawing a walk. Hunter and Swaim both reached base twice with a hit and a walk.
Both teams recorded eight hits in the contest.
Graduate pitcher
Zach Powell (0-2) was tagged with the loss as he allowed five runs over 2.2 innings.
Game 2: #22 East Stroudsburg 11 – Concord 4
Eight runs across the two innings were the difference in the contest.
ESU plated five runs in the third inning and added three more in the fourth.
The Mountain Lions brought in a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth on a two-RBI single from M. DiSanti. N. DiSanti and junior outfielder
Dawson Gragg touched home after reaching an error and single, respectively.
Concord cut into the 10-2 deficit with a sacrifice fly in the fifth inning with Hunter racing in.
The final run for CU came in the ninth as Hunter scored for a second time on a groundout.
M. DiSanti had another strong game with a 4-for-5 nightcap. Hunter was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and a walk out of the cleanup spot. N. DiSanti added two RBI and two hits. Redshirt freshman infielder
Braden Farmer was 2-for-2 off the bench.
The Mountain Lions are scheduled to face Ashland Saturday and Sunday, February 22-23.
