Davidson’s Three-Pointer Lifts Concord over Frostburg State, 79-77

ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University women's basketball team took down Mountain East Conference foe Frostburg State in the closing seconds at the Carter Center Saturday afternoon.

After the Bobcats (12-8, 7-6 MEC) tied the game 73-73 with 2:08 left in the game, senior guard Skylar Davidson scored CU's (9-11, 6-7 MEC) final six points to come away with the victory.

Davidson sank a mid-range jumper with 1:02 on the clock to hold a two-point edge, but FSU answered with a field goal to knot the game once again, 75-75, with 39 seconds remaining. Then, with the game clock under 10 seconds, Davidson buried a long three-point basket as the shot clock expired to lead 78-75 with six seconds left in regulation.

Frostburg State made a pair of free throws on the following possession, but Davidson went 1-for-2 at the line with two seconds left to seal the 79-77 victory.

After falling into an 8-2 hole early on, CU engineered a 9-0 scoring run to take an 11-8 lead at the 2:33 mark in the first quarter. Back-to-back three pointers from Davidson and senior guard Sanaiya Morris saw the Mountain Lions carry a 17-11 margin into the second period.

Junior forward Abbie Smith wasted no time, finding the back of the net 11 seconds into the second quarter to lead 19-11. FSU closed the gap to four, but junior forward Imani Hickman got a steal and converted a three-point play that pushed the lead back to seven, 23-16, at the 8:00 mark. The Bobcats regained the advantage with 1:38 left until halftime, but a mid-range jumper from sophomore guard Alexis Frazee gave the Maroon and Gray 33-31 edge at the break.

Both teams wrestled for the advantage in the third quarter, but back-to-back turnovers from Frostburg State led to four-straight CU points to jump back in front 52-48, with 2:13 left in the frame and lead 54-53 to start the fourth.

The Bobcats jumped back ahead by four in the opening moments of the fourth quarter, but an 11-2 run shot the Mountain Lions into control with just over five minutes remaining, 65-60. Junior guard Kennedy Scales, Morris, and Hickman added three-point buckets during the run before Frostburg State inched back before the final two-minute stretch.

Davidson led CU with 20 points on 7-for-12 shooting and sinking three three-pointers. Hickman scored 18 points also drained multiple three-pointers. Smith (12) and Morris (11) also contributed at least 10 points on offense. CU made a season-high 10 three-pointers in the win with Morris (3) and Scales (2) making multiple long-range buckets as well. The game also featured 10 ties and nine lead changes.
