Concord Uses Three-Point Line to Defeat Point, 78-64

PITTSBURGH - The Concord University women's basketball team remained perfect in Mountain East Conference play with a 78-64 win over Point Park at CCAC-Allegheny Gymnasium Wednesday night.
 
Concord (7-3, 4-0 MEC) came out of the gates firing to power past Point Park (3-5, 1-4 MEC).
 
After going down 6-2 in the first few minutes, Concord got red hot. The Mountain Lions went on a 19-2 run, consisting of five three-pointers and a pair of layups.
 
Freshman guard Lacee Smith nailed her first four tries from three-point range while junior guard Alexis Frazee dropped in the fifth three-pointer, and the Mountain Lions were rolling after the first quarter with a 23-14 lead.
 
The offensive surge continued into the second quarter. The Mountain Lions hit five more threes in the quarter with everyone getting involved. Frazee connected on two more triples while senior guard Kennedy Scales, junior guard Kiley Smich and freshman forward Nasiya Smith all hit a three-pointer of their own. Overall, CU finished the first half on a 23-8 run over the final 6:02.
 
At the half, Concord had already set its season high for made three-pointers with 10, and the Maroon and Gray was efficient on just 17 attempts. And with 30 points from three-point range, CU led 49-29 at the break.
 
The Mountain Lions played even with Point Park in the third quarter as both teams scored 15 points.
 
The lead got as high as 30 points, 74-44, after CU opened the fourth quarter on a 10-0 run. Point Park closed the contest on a 12-0 run for the final margin of 14 points.
 
Concord's 4-0 start in conference play is the best since joining the MEC and dates back to the 2009-10 season when the Mountain Lions won four straight games to open the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference slate.
 
Senior forward Abbie Smith finished with 17 points and 11 rebounds, picking up her seventh double-double of the season. Frazee added a season-high 17 points to go with four assists and two rebounds. Lacee Smith set a new career-high with 15 points, all coming from three-point land. Sophomore guard Kenyah Stubbs made an impact in each facet of the game, scoring eight points, dishing out six assists, bringing down five rebounds, and collecting five steals.
 
CU finished with 13 three-pointers in the contest.
 
Concord stays on the road to face No. 21 Fairmont State this Saturday at 2:00 p.m. in the last game before Christmas break.
