RADFORD, Va. – The Concord University women's basketball team was defeated 100-48 by Radford in an exhibition at Carillion Clinic Court at the Dedmon Center Monday night.
The Mountain Lions went toe-to-toe with the Division I members of the Big South during the opening quarter. A three-point play by senior forward
Abbie Smith at the 4:56 mark of the first period gave CU a 9-8 edge. The teams traded buckets as Radford gained a 14-11 lead.
However, Concord finished the quarter on a 10-0 run over the final 2:09.
Freshman guard
Lacee Smith tied the game with a three-pointer before freshman forward
Jamecia Huntley gave the Mountain Lions a 16-14 lead. Junior guard
Alexis Frazee followed with her own triple, and freshman guard
Cadence Blackburn punctuated the run with a fast break layup in the final 30 seconds of the first quarter.
CU maintained its lead until the Highlands went up 26-25 with 7:21 remaining in the first half. Concord stayed within range of Radford as a pair of free throws from junior guard
Kiley Smich made the score 28-27 with less than six minutes left. Smich answered an RU three-pointer with a bucket to keep the margin, 31-29, but it was as close as the Mountain Lions would get for the remainder of the first half as Radford took a 44-34 lead into halftime.
The game featured seven lead changes and five ties.
Eleven different Mountain Lions scored in the contest. Smich had eight points. Blackburn scored all six of her points in the first half. Sophomore guard
Kenyah Stubbs chipped in six points. Frazee had five points and three of CU's seven assists.
Concord returns to regular-season play and Mountain East Conference action 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at Point Park.
