ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University football team was unable to keep pace with Fairmont State in the second half as Concord lost 31-17 Saturday afternoon in a Mountain East Conference game at Callaghan Stadium.
Down 14-7 at halftime, CU (3-7, 2-6 MEC) was first to strike in the third quarter. Graduate kicker
Kenyon Bowyer booted through a 35-yard field goal at the 8:57 mark of the third. The field goal was set up by a 24-yard run by graduate running back
Rashad Luckey-Dowdy that carried with it a 15-yard facemask penalty.
The Mountain Lions continued their push as the defense got Fairmont State (6-4, 3-4 MEC) to go three-and-out on the next possession. CU's momentum as squashed as it had a long run into Fairmont State territory wiped out by a penalty, and three plays later Concord had to punt to FSU.
Fairmont State was able to stretch its lead out to 21-10 with less than three minutes left in the third quarter. However, the Mountain Lions had an answer as Luckey-Dowdy powered his way into the end zone on a two-yard score. The short run was set up by a 21-yard run from junior running back
Israel Rhodes to get the ball to midfield. Then, a 22-yard reception by redshirt freshman wide receiver '
Keyon Concepcion took the ball inside the five-yard line a few plays later.
On the ensuing Fighting Falcons' possession, Concord held Fairmont State to a field goal to stay within seven points, 24-17, with 8:20 left. But, a turnover on the first play of the next Concord drive put the Mountain Lions in a tough spot.
Fairmont State turned the fumble into points to go up 31-17 with 4:57 remaining.
Both teams scored in the opening quarter with CU's coming on a 33-yard pass from sophomore quarterback
Tyler Mizzell to senior wide receiver
Rodney Mike at the 7:48 mark of the first. The passing touchdown capped a quick four-play, 90-yard drive.
FSU scored just past the halfway point of the second quarter to gain the 14-7 edge at halftime.
Mizzell finished the day with 213 yards passing and a touchdown. Both Concepcion and sophomore wide receiver
Que Moore had four receptions. Moore tallied 81 yards. Concepcion went for 47 yards.
Luckey-Dowdy carried the ball 15 times for 65 yards to go with his third touchdown of the year.
Sophomore linebacker
Xavier Ellison racked up 11 tackles. Sophomore defensive back Ar'Terrian Godrey and junior defensive back
Nehemiah Scott both had nine stops. Redshirt freshman defensive back
Berlin Campfort snared his first career interception in the first half.
CU finishes up the season with a non-conference game at Ferrum Saturday, November 15 at 2:00 p.m.
