Concord Loses Heartbreaker to Charleston in MEC Semifinals

BUCKHANNON, W.Va. – The Concord University volleyball team came up short in the Mountain East Conference Semifinals to Charleston as the Mountain Lions were defeated in four sets Friday night inside the Rockefeller Center.

After Concord (21-9) won the first set 26-24, Charleston (22-12) won the next three sets 16-25, 17-25, 25-27.
UC came out hot as the Golden Eagles scored 10 of the first 15 points. Concord slowly chipped away at the deficit, but only tied the set at 15-15—after a kill from sophomore right side Maddie Stull. However, the Golden Eagles broke off a 5-1 spurt to open up a 20-16 edge. Charleston kept the lead until consecutive service aces from junior setter Paige Richmond tied the set before giving CU the lead, 24-23. Back-to-back kills from junior outside hitter Meg Williams secured the first set.

Charleston controlled the next two sets to push the Mountain Lions to the brink.

After an early back-and-forth, Concord took control of the fourth set with a quick 3-0 run as freshman middle hitter Addison Adkins provided a pair of kills. The four-point edge, 9-5, remained at least three points. Eventually, the Mountain Lions grew the lead to seven points, 19-12, after a block from Adkins and Stull. But, Charleston clawed back to knot the set at 23-23. With Concord facing match point, junior middle hitter Jasmine Anderson and Stull came up with a block. UC scored the next two points.

Williams finished with her 13th double-double of the season as she recorded 12 kills and 16 digs. Junior outside hitter Chloe Thompson just missed a double-double with 10 kills and eight digs.

Sophomore setter Haley Sweeney notched 22 assists while Richmond added 21 assists.
