FLARE FOR THE DRAMA
Concord advanced to its second straight MEC Championship with a 3-2 win over West Liberty Wednesday night at Callaghan Stadium. Senior forward Malher Santi Possu scored twice in the game, including the game-winning goal in the 69th minute. It was Possu's second career brace to go with the three hat tricks he has in his career. The Cali, Colombia native is now second in goals scored at CU with 23. Junior defender Santiago Lopez accounted for the middle goal in the win over West Liberty. Wednesday night marked the sixth straight game for Concord that has either ended in a draw or been decided by one goal.

SET PIECE STRATEGY
All three Mountain Lion goals versus West Liberty came via the set piece. The first and third goals were scored directly after throw ins. Senior defender Zakari Messam tallied his first assist of the season on Possu's first goal. Possu accounted for an assist from a free kick that found Lopez for his first career goal. And junior forward Dominique Malhomme assisted on Possu's game winner after a throw in was initially deflected right to Malhomme. Dating back to the Salem game (Oct. 22), five of Concord's last seven goals have come from set pieces. Along the way, senior defender Ted Roberts has collected two assists while senior defender Erik Lotysz and senior midfielder Toby Evens-Gilham have been the goal scorers.

AGAIN FOR TEN
Sunday's MEC Championship marks the 10th time since the start of the 2023 season that Concord and Charleston will square off. The teams have played twice in each of the last three regular seasons while meeting three times in the conference postseason—2023 semifinals, 2024 championship and 2025 championship—as well the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament last season. Last November marked Concord's first-ever win over the Golden Eagles, a 3-2 win at home. And 11 days prior to this year's MEC Championship game, CU played Charleston to a 0-0 draw, the first tie in program history for the Mountain Lions against UC. Senior goalkeeper Miguel Oliveria was forced to make just one save as Concord outshot the Golden Eagles, 7-4, November 5.

CHAMPIONSHIP STAGE
Since the inception of the MEC—prior to the 2013 season—Charleston has played in every MEC Men's Soccer Championship, winning 11 of the previous 12, UC lost to West Virginia Wesleyan in penalty kicks in 2017. The Mountain Lions will not be intimidated by Charleston as CU narrowly missed eliminating the Golden Eagles from the NCAA Tournament last season. Charleston scored a penalty in the 86th minute of last year's NCAA Tournament contest. In last year's MEC Championship, Charleston secured a 3-1 win over CU. Senior goalkeeper Nathan Scargill stopped seven shots. Roberts assisted on Concord's goal. Concord (13) and Charleston (14) have combined 27 wins. Last year when the teams played for the MEC Championship, the sides had combined for 33 wins.

SCOUTING THE GOLDEN EAGLES
UC has both the MEC Offensive and Defensive Player of the Year this season. Sam Newell scored four goals and tied for the MEC lead in assists, nine, with CU's Roberts. Franco Tradatti was this year's MEC Defensive Player of the Year. He scored twice and dished out two assists while helping Charleston record 15 shutouts. UC's leading goal scorer is Martin Echarren who found the back of the net seven times. Newell scored in Charleston's 2-1 win in Athens in mid-September.
