Concord Falters at Charleston

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -  The Concord University volleyball team dropped a four-set match to Charleston Friday night in a Mountain East Conference game at the Wehrle Center.

CU (12-2, 2-1 MEC) staved off a Charleston (9-8, 2-1 MEC) rally in the first set to win the opening game 27-25, but was unable to keep the momentum as the Mountain Lions lost the next three sets 25-20, 25-13, 25-15.

Up 11-9 in the first set, Concord opened up a 15-10 lead by scoring four of the next five points. UC was able to get within 16-13, however, the next four points belonged to the Mountain Lions with freshman middle hitter Addison Adkins finishing off the run with a service ace. CU continued to lead 22-15 after a kill from junior outside hitter Meg Williams. However, Charleston closed to within 22-20 before tying the set at 24-24. A kill by Williams was followed by a kill from junior middle hitter Jasmine Anderson as Concord closed out the set.

Concord stayed step for step with the Golden Eagles in the second game as a block from Anderson and Williams made the score 17-15, but UC rattled off a 5-0 run to take a seven-point advantage. The closest CU got the rest of the set was 23-19 after a kill from sophomore right side Maddie Stull.

The Golden Eagles hit over .300 in the third and fourth sets as the Mountain Lions were unable to keep pace.

Junior outside hitter Chloe Thompson led Concord with 12 kills. Williams tallied her third straight double-double with 10 kills and 14 digs. Junior libero Allie Davis notched 20 digs.

Junior setter Paige Richmond collected 16 assists with sophomore setter Haley Sweeney registering 12 assists.

The Mountain Lions return to the Carter Center to take on MEC South leader West Virginia Wesleyan 7:00 p.m. Tuesday.
