SUMMERSVILLE, W.Va. – A slow start by the Concord University football team was too much to overcome in a 42-30 defeat to Glenville State Saturday afternoon in a Mountain East Conference game at Memorial Stadium.
GSU (4-3, 3-1 MEC) scored twice in the first five minutes of the game to jump out to a 14-0 lead. The Mountain Lions (2-5, 1-4 MEC) had an answer near the end of the first quarter though. Concord cashed in a short field, needing just six plays to go 45 yards and find the endzone when sophomore quarterback
Tyler Mizzell hit junior tight end
Damari Heller for a 12-yard touchdown at the 4:16 mark of the first.
Glenville State added a touchdown midway through the second quarter, and the only scoring for CU in the second was a 28-yard field goal by graduate kicker
Kenyon Bowyer on the final play of the first half.
Another GSU touchdown with just over seven minutes left in the third quarter took the lead to 28-10.
On the ensuing Concord drive, Mizzell took off on 2
nd-and-18 for a 63-yard touchdown run to close within 28-17. It was the longest run of the season for any Mountain Lion.
The Pioneers, though, took the lead right back to 18 points with another touchdown.
Into the fourth quarter, the Mountain Lions found themselves in another long yardage situation just inside Glenville State territory, facing 3
rd-and-21. However, it was no problem for CU as Mizzell hit sophomore wide receiver
Que Moore for a 44-yard touchdown pass.
But, every time Concord scored it was answered by Glenville State. After the Pioneers scored to go up 42-23, CU used another connection from Mizzell to Moore—this time from 13 yards—to make the score 42-30.
GSU was able to run the final 2:51 off the clock and Concord never got the ball back.
Mizzell finished the day 24-of-44 for 230 yards and three touchdowns. He also added 128 yards on the ground on just seven carries, becoming the first CU quarterback with 100 yards rushing in a game in 12 years.
Moore and redshirt freshman wide receiver
Keyon Concepcion both caught seven passes in the game. Moore finished one yard shy of his first career 100-yard receiving game, but had his first multi-touchdown game. Concepcion netted 76 receiving yards.
Junior defensive back
Nehemiah Scott had 13 tackles to lead the defense. Sophomore defensive back
Taurin Kemp collected six tackles and teamed up with freshman defensive back
Myles Pratt for CU's only sack in the game.
Concord returns home to face West Virginia Wesleyan 2:00 p.m. Saturday, October 25.
