ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University Athletic Department and the Concord University Cheerleading program will honor the legacy and life of former cheerleader Sam Nelson who passed away earlier this week during Saturday's home basketball doubleheader versus Frostburg State.
Nelson was a cheerleader for the Mountain Lions from 2010-2014 as she was part of the nationally-recognized program that Lisa and Sara Blankenship built at CU.
After a seven-year, courageous battle with cancer, Nelson passed Sunday, January 26.
Once graduating from Concord, Nelson returned in a volunteer capacity to help current cheer coach Jessica Doty as she assisted with the program.
The Concord cheer program will be taking up donations at the admission gate Saturday afternoon to aid her husband, Wesley, in the medical expenses from Sam's battle. Additionally, a moment of silence will be observed prior to the 2:00 p.m. women's game Saturday. And a seat will be reserved in the Carter Center bleachers in memory of Sam.
