OH, SO CLOSE
On Tuesday, Concord became nationally ranked for the first time in program history as the Mountain Lions moved into the United Soccer Coaches' Division II Poll at number 15. Then, on Wednesday CU faced off with perennial national contender Charleston. Concord had never beaten or even tied Charleston in 39 all-time meetings, but was on the brink of tying the fourth-ranked Golden Eagles. After letting in a goal in the 54
th minute, the Maroon and Gray received the first goal of the season from junior forward
Richard Henry in the 60
th minute. The CU backline of junior
Kai Forsyth, junior
Erik Lotysz, sophomore
Zakari Messam and junior
Ted Roberts along with junior goalkeeper
Miguel Oliveria kept the game tied 1-1 until the 88
th minute. Concord was outshot 18-5 in the game, but nearly came away with a draw against Charleston.
IMPORTANT EARLY GAME
CU and Frostburg State split a pair of regular-season meetings in 2023 with the home team winning each time. The Bobcats scored in the 42
nd minute of a 1-0 win September 23 last fall. But the Mountain Lions turned the tide on FSU October 7 with a convincing 3-0 victory. Junior forward
Fabian Amhof assisted on a 24
th-minute goal by senior forward
Carlos Zuniga before scoring his own goal in the 56
th minute. It was just the second time in seven tries that Concord had defeated Frostburg State. Sunday's game carries added circumstances. Charleston (15 points) and Concord (13 points) are the only two teams in the MEC with double-digit points, but a Frostburg State win would boost FSU to 12 points.
CAROLINA FEELING
Wednesday will only be the second all-time meeting between Concord and Shaw as the Bears picked off CU in 2021, 2-1. After Sunday's game, the Mountain Lions play two straight non-conference games with Salem visiting Athens Sunday, October 6. Concord is 3-7 all-time versus teams from state of North Carolina with the most recent win coming against Bob Jones in 2022. And the Maroon and Gray is also 2-2 all-time versus Chowan. When CU travels to Raleigh, North Carolina Wednesday, it will be the first time playing in North Carolina since 2017 at Chowan.

th ranked Davis & Elkins September 22. Carlos Quintero Rivas (three), Hugo Portillo (two) and Mason Salvadge (two) have all scored multiple goals this year. Jan Foret is only allowing one goal per game and has two shutouts.
