Concord Wins Final Two Games to Finish Off Sweep of Davis & Elkins, 9-6, 16-2

ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University baseball team completed a four-game sweep of Davis & Elkins Monday afternoon with 9-6 and 16-2 wins at Anderson Field in Mountain East Conference action.

Concord improves to 17-12 overall and is now 8-6 in conference games. Davis & Elkins falls to 0-32 and 0-14 in the league.

Game 1: Concord 9 – Davis & Elkins 6
The third home run of the game for senior infielder Chris Satcher proved to be the difference as CU fended off a Senators' comeback.

With the game tied at 6-6 entering the top of the seventh inning (Concord was playing as the road team), graduate infielder Daniel Layne reached on an outfield error to start the inning. Junior outfielder Demetri Jamison followed by getting hit with a pitch.

After a D&E strikeout, Satcher stepped the plate—already with two solo home runs in the contest. Satcher was able to work a full count then turned around the 3-2 pitch and blasted his single-game program record third home run out to left field to give Concord a three-run advantage.

Junior utility MJ Hunter tossed a perfect bottom of the seventh to secure the win for the Mountain Lions while tallying his fourth save of the season.

Concord jumped out to a 5-0 advantage through two innings. Satcher led off the second with a home run to left field. Concord was able to score four more run with two outs. Junior infielder Brendan Brady doubled home freshman catcher Marshall Basham. A walk to Hunter brought up Layne who roped his first triple of the season to right center field, scoring two runs

And Jamison finished off the rally with a run-scoring single.

The Senators didn't go away as they scored five unanswered runs to tie the game in the bottom of the fourth.

Satcher responded with a solo home run in the top of the fifth, but D&E came right back with a tally in the bottom of the fifth.

Satcher went 3-for-4 with three home runs and five RBI in game one. Freshman outfielder Demario Faison and Jamison each had two hits. Layne notched two RBI.

Faison (1-0) was the winning pitcher as he struck out three in two scoreless innings of relief.

Game 2: Concord 16 – Davis & Elkins 2
The Mountain Lions controlled the game from start to finish as freshman pitcher Jake Robinson backed the offensive attack with the best start of his young career.

CU jumped out 6-1 through four innings with four runs coming in the fourth inning.

An infield single got the fourth-inning scoring start as a bunt from Faison brought in Jamison from third. Three batters later, a bases-loaded walk to junior infielder Brendan Brady plated a second run before Hunter came up with a two-out, two run single.

With the comfortable lead, Robinson settled in as he faced the minimum in the first two innings and logged six strikeouts through four innings.

Eight more runs came in the sixth. Three straight bases-loaded walks were followed by run-scoring singles from fifth-year senior infielder Zack Saryeldin and Satcher.

Robinson kept the momentum going by striking out the side in the sixth inning—the second time in the game he had accomplished the feat.

Robinson (2-2) tossed his first career complete game as he allowed two runs (one earned) on six hits. The Raleigh, North Carolina native racked up 10 strikeouts, the most for any CU pitcher this season.

Satcher went 4-for-4 in the nightcap with a double and two RBI. He finished the afternoon with seven hits in eight at-bats and seven RBI.

Faison and Jamison both notched multi-hit games as each went 2-for-3 with a combined five runs scored. Basham collected two hits.

Winners of seven straight games, Concord welcomes West Virginia Wesleyan to Anderson Field 1:00 p.m. Saturday for the start of a four-game series.
