Concord Storms Back in Game Two for Doubleheader Split at Glenville State

GLENVILLE, W.Va. – The Concord University softball team used a three-run sixth frame to complete a come-from-behind victory for a Mountain East Conference doubleheader split against Glenville State at the Sue Morris Sports Complex Wednesday afternoon.

CU moves to 23-21 overall and 11-13 in MEC play after the split, while Glenville State sits at 17-18 overall and 11-13 in MEC games.

Game One: Glenville State 8 – Concord 0
A five-run first inning propelled GSU to a game one victory.

Sophomore pitcher/infielder Madison Hollis singled to lead off the second inning for CU. She moved into scoring position on a wild pitch with one out, but was unable to cross the plate.

Concord would put another runner in scoring position in the fifth when sophomore utility Kayla Sholter drew a two-out walk. Junior infielder Kylee Stacy singled to center field the next at-bat, but a fielder's choice ended the Mountain Lions threat.

Hollis singled again to begin the sixth inning, but was unable to score. Three Glenville State runs in the bottom of the sixth ended game one, 8-0.

Hollis (9-11) was 2-for-3 at the plate, but earned the loss in the circle. She allowed two earned runs across 1.0 innings pitched.

Game Two: Concord 4 – Glenville State 3
A sixth-inning rally saw CU grab game two for the split.

Trailing 3-1 entering the sixth, Stacy singled to left field with one out. Junior infielder Courtney Raines followed with her own base hit to center field, moving Stacy into scoring position. A fielder's choice advanced Stacy to third base, but CU only had one out to work with in the inning. An infield single from freshman infielder Kendall Morgan drove home Stacy in to cut the deficit to 3-2. Now with the go-ahead run on base base, Sholter smacked a clutch two-run double to give Concord its first lead of the game.

Despite allowing two base runners in the bottom of the sixth, senior pitcher Nancy-Jo Roberts held the Pioneers scoreless over the final two frames to earn the win.

After GSU took a 1-0 lead in the second inning, Stacy plated junior outfielder Kayla McCraw to tie the game in the third after McCraw reached on a fielder's choice and stole second with one out.

GSU scored two more runs in the bottom of the fifth before the Mountain Lions' rally.

Stacy was a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate, driving in one run and scoring one run. Sholter collected her first career double to drive in the go-ahead runs in the sixth. Junior outfielder Delaney Fulk reached base twice by going 1-for-2 with a walk

Roberts (11-7) allowed eight hits and three earned runs while fanning two GSU hitters.

CU returns home to face Salem in a non-conference doubleheader at the CU Softball Field Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
