WISE, Va. – The Concord University baseball team clubbed five home runs on its way to a 13-5 win over UVa.-Wise Tuesday afternoon in a non-conference game at Stallard Field.
Concord (22-12) jumped out to a 2-0 lead after one inning as fifth-year senior infielder
Michael Dupont was responsible for a run in the inning on a two-out RBI double.
Fellow fifth-year senior infielder
Zack Saryeldin started the home run parade in the third inning as he connected for his 11
th home run of the season, a solo shot out to left field. The scoring continued in the fourth inning with graduate infielder
Daniel Layne and senior infielder
Chris Satcher came up with run-scoring singles during a three-run rally.
Up 6-0, freshman catcher
Marshall Basham blasted his third home run `of the season, a one-out solo tally in fifth.
With the game under control thanks in part to the offense as well as three different pitchers who held UVa.-Wise (12-31) to one run on two hits through the first five innings, the Mountain Lions put the game out of reach with a five-run sixth inning.
Layne led off the frame with his first home run of the season. A double and a hit batter put runners on first and second base, but two UVa.-Wise strikeouts threatened to end the CU scoring early. However, Basham came up with an RBI single before sophomore utility
Dawson Gragg pulled his second home run of the season fair down the right field line, a three-run blast to take the lead to 12-1.
Junior outfielder
Austin Amtower helped the Mountain Lions tie the single-game program record for home runs with his first career homer in the top of the ninth.
The pitching trio of graduate student
Nick Sanso, freshman
Mason Kisamore and junior
Connor Brizendine limited the Cavaliers early on. UVa.-Wise did score three runs on five hits in the bottom of the ninth. Freshman
Demario Faison (2-0) was the winning pitcher as he tossed a perfect sixth inning.
CU pounded out 16 hits in the game. Gragg and Layne both finished with three hits and a triple shy of the cycle. Saryeldin was 2-for-4 with an RBI while Basham went 2-for-5 at the plate with two RBI.
The Mountain Lions welcome West Virginia State to Anderson Field 1:00 p.m. Saturday for the start of a four-game Mountain East Conference South Division series.
