ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University baseball team split a non-conference twinbill with Salem Sunday afternoon at Anderson Field, winning 5-4 and losing 12-1.
Concord is now 10-10 while Salem is 17-8.
Game 1: Concord 5 – West Virginia Wesleyan 4
Concord got in a 4-0 hole, but scored the game's final five runs to pick up a game one victory.
Salem plated two runs in the first inning and tacked on two more scores in the third inning.
With just one hit through its first three plate appearances, CU broke up the Salem shutout bid in the bottom of the fourth as junior outfielder
Demetri Jamison pulled a solo home run down the left field line, his first career homer.
After a quiet fifth inning, the Mountain Lions rallied for the lead in the sixth. Singles by senior infielder
Daniel Layne and fifth-year senior infielder
Zack Saryeldin along with a walk to Jamison loaded the bases with one out. A sacrifice fly by sophomore utility
Dawson Gragg plated Layne to cut the margin in half, 4-2.
Then, senior infielder
Chris Satcher belted a three-run home run on a 2-1 pitch to push Concord in front for the first time in the game.
Salem pushed the tying run to second base in the top of the seventh and a two-out walk put the go-ahead run on base, but junior utility
MJ Hunter was summoned to record the final out of the game—a line drive to Saryeldin at second base.
Junior pitcher
Rylee Nicholas (3-1) worked 6.2 innings as he allowed two earned runs and six hits while striking out three. Hunter earned his third save of the year.
Satcher was 1-for-3 with RBI. Jamison was 1-of-2 with two runs scored.
Game 2: Salem 12 – Concord 1
The Tigers ran out to a 9-0 lead as Concord was forced to play catch up throughout the second game.
Jamison homered for the second straight game with a leadoff shot down the left field line in the bottom of the sixth. Jaryd Lund of Salem held the Mountain Lions to four hits in the second contest.
Layne had a double early in the contest. And junior infielder
Brendan Brady and Hunter each had a hit in the game.
Sophomore pitcher
Evan Hosey came out of the bullpen to throw five innings of relief work. His gave up three earned runs and struck out three as he started his first outing of the season with four
scoreless innings on the mound.
Junior pitcher
Connor Brizendine (2-3) allowed six runs in his start.
The Mountain Lions finish up Mountain East Conference North Division play Friday and Saturday when they travel to Wheeling and West Liberty for a pair of doubleheaders
