ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University baseball team lost the first two games of a three-game series versus Ashland Sunday afternoon in non-conference play at Anderson Field.
CU is 3-3 while Ashland wins its first two games of the season on opening weekend for the Eagles.
Game 1: Ashland 5 – Concord 0
AU scored three of its five runs via the home run ball in the series opener.
Graduate pitchers
Andrew Neff and
Nick Sanso shut down the Eagles over the first three innings as they held Ashland to one hit.
The Eagles hit solo home runs in the fourth and fifth innings to go up 2-0 before tacking on two more runs in the sixth. And Ashland capped the scoring with a run another solo home run in the seventh.
The Mountain Lions had chances to jump on AU early as they stranded the bases loaded in the second inning after getting three runs on with just one out. Concord had the two of the first three batters get on board in the third innings on a pair of walks, but could not get those runners around either.
CU was held to five hits in game one. Junior infielder
Brendan Brady reached base twice on two walks. Fifth-year senior infielder
Zack Saryeldin was 1-for-3 with a walk.
Neff (1-1) went six innings as he gave up all five runs while recording two strikeouts.
Game 2: Ashland 16 – Concord 0
Ashland scored at least two runs in five of its nine at-bats in the nightcap.
Junior utility
MJ Hunter doubled to lead off the bottom of the first as CU was chasing as a three-run deficit at the time, and Brady followed with one of his two walks in the contest. But, Concord was unable to get anything on the board in the bottom of the first.
Concord was held to three hits in game two.
Junior pitcher
Connor Brizendine (0-2) was the pitcher of record as he allowed three runs in the first inning. Fellow junior pitcher
Rylee Nicholas tallied strikeouts in 4.2 innings of relief.
CU and Ashland conclude the three-game series 12:00 p.m. Monday.
