ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University baseball team used a 10-run fourth inning to win the first game of a three-game series with Pitt-Johnstown, 14-2, Sunday afternoon in non-conference play at Anderson Field.
Both teams scored a pair of runs in the first innings as Concord (2-0) used back-to-back doubles by fifth-year senior infielder
Zack Saryeldin and senior infielder
Chris Satcher to even the game.
CU scratched across a run in the third inning on a Pitt-Johnstown (0-1) error before erupting for 10 runs in the fourth.
Two of first three Concord batters reached via walks before three straight errors sparked the rally. Holding a 5-2 lead, Saryeldin singled home two runs. During the next at-bat, another error on Saryeldin's steal attempt of second brought home senior infielder
Daniel Layne from third base to elevate the lead to 8-2.
Freshman catcher
Maddux Walker and junior infielder
Brendan Brady both tacked on two-run singles in the frame.
The 13-2 lead was more than enough for graduate pitcher
Andrew Neff (1-0). After coming on in the second inning, Neff tossed six shutout innings as he surrendered three hits and two walks while striking out five. Of the three hits Neff allowed, two came in the seventh inning as Pitt-Johnstown loaded the bases, but was unable to get any closer in its final at-bat. Neff retired nine of the first 10 batters he faced.
Saryeldin finished the afternoon by going 2-for-4 with two runs scored and three RBI. Brady added two hits and two RBI. And junior utility
MJ Hunter threw in two RBI.
Game two of Sunday's doubleheader was suspended in the sixth inning with UPJ leading 14-9. The teams will conclude the seven-inning contest 12:00 p.m. Monday before finishing the series with a nine-inning game afterwards.
