WISE, Va. – The Concord University softball team won two close games, 8-6 and 6-5, in a doubleheader sweep of UVa.-Wise at Cavalier Field Sunday.
Game 1: Concord 8 – UVa.-Wise 6
The Mountain Lions scored seven of their eight runs in the first four innings as they held off UVa.-Wise in the final innings.
Graduate catcher/outfielder
Jolie Privett got CU on the board with an RBI single in the second inning. Later in the inning, a bases-loaded walk to redshirt freshman outfielder
Sophia Conger doubled the Concord advantage.
A second RBI base hit by Privett accounted for the scoring in the third inning before the CU bats broke out for four runs in the fourth.
A leadoff single gave a promising start to the inning before consecutive outs. However, sophomore infielder
Lacie Lewis blasted a two-run home run out to left. The Mountain Lions were able to keep the momentum going with two outs. Sophomore pitcher/infielder
Madison Hollis doubled before scoring on a base hit from sophomore catcher/utility
Morgan Gleason. And she would score on an opposite field double to right by junior infielder
Courtney Raines.
Leading 7-1 after four innings, Concord saw UVa.-Wise score two runs in each of its next two at-bats. But, a Hollis home run in the sixth provided insurance in a two-run victory.
Hollis, Privett and Raines all had two hits. Lewis drove in two hits.
Hollis (2-0) tossed 4.1 innings as she allowed three runs (two earned) on five hits. She tallied three strikeouts.
Game 2: Concord 6 – UVa.-Wise 5
Concord used the home run ball to erase a 3-1 deficit after three innings.
UVa.-Wise jumped out to a fast start with three runs in the bottom of the first inning. CU was able to steal some momentum back with a one-out, solo home run from Privett in the top of the second inning.
The deficit remained two runs until the top of the fifth when the Mountain Lions plated three runs. With one out, junior infielder
Kylee Stacy singled and Lewis followed with a home run out to right field to tie the game. Later in the inning, a sacrifice fly by Raines gave CU a 4-3 edge.
CU was able to add some insurance in the top of the sixth as junior first baseman
Kassidy Garvey launched a home run. And Lewis provided a two-out double to score Stay. The late scoring was crucial as the Cavaliers drew within 6-5 in the bottom of the sixth.
UVa.-Wise was able to put the tying run on base in the bottom of the seventh by way of a one-out walk. However, senior pitcher
Nancy-Jo Roberts got consecutive outs to end the game.
Lewis was 3-for-4 in the nightcap as she finished a triple shy of the cycle. She collected three RBI. Stacy was 2-for-4 with two runs scored.
Roberts (1-1) stranded 12 runners on base as she tossed a complete game. She allowed four hits and five runs.
Concord is back in action when it hosts Virginia Union in the home opener February 18.
