Concord Drops Home Contest Against Point Park

ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University women's basketball team fell 76-71 to Mountain East Conference newcomer Point Park in a league game held at the Carter Center Wednesday evening.

Trailing by eight to begin the fourth quarter, CU (3-6, 1-2 MEC) went on a 10-2 scoring run to tie the game, 57-57, with 6:44 remaining. Junior forward Abbie Smith got the spurt started with a three-point play followed by a three-point basket from junior forward Imani Hickman.

The Mountain Lions and Pioneers (2-6, 1-3 MEC) traded baskets as the score read 61-61, but PPU jumped ahead once again, 71-66. With 41 seconds on the clock, sophomore guard Madison Young made a pair of free throws and connected on a three-point basket to cut the deficit to two, 73-71, with 29 seconds left.

However, three free throws from Point Park sealed a 76-71 win.

After allowing PPU to score the game's first four points, CU scored seven-straight points, using four difference scorers in the process. Both teams jockeyed for the lead throughout the frame, with a jumper from freshman guard Amarrah Carter-Bennett giving the Maroon and Gray a one-point edge, 18-17, at the end of the first quarter.

With the game knotted 27-27 midway through the second period, graduate forward Trina Lewis converted a layup after junior guard Carolynn Washington buried a three-pointer to swell the lead to five at the 4:40 mark.

Five CU free throws in the final two minutes gave Concord a 37-35 edge heading into the halftime break.

Senior guard Sanaiya Morris opened up the second half scoring with a three-pointer 15 seconds into the frame to lead by five, but that would be the last time the Mountain Lions would lead in the game. CU was able to tie the scoreboard three more times throughout the game, but could not gain the advantage back.

The game featured 12 ties and 10 lead changes.

Smith led the Mountain Lions with 17 points and 15 rebounds for her league-leading sixth double-double of the season. Other double figure scorers included Morris (15) and Young (14).

Concord plays the first game of a two-game road stretch at Salem Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
