FROSTBURG, Md. – The Concord University women's basketball team dropped a Mountain East Conference game to Frostburg State, 74-64, Wednesday at Bobcat Arena.
Trailing by 16 points early in the fourth quarter, the Mountain Lions (4-7, 1-3 MEC) had one last run to close in on the Frostburg State (7-3, 4-1 MEC) advantage.
CU charged an 11-0 run after the Bobcats scored the first bucket of the frame to cut the margin to five. Senior guard Saniaya Morris converted a pair of layups to start the scoring charge. Then, graduate forward
Trina Lewis grabbed an offensive board and connected on a putback to bring the score to 63-53 at the 5:38 mark. Morris knocked down a three-pointer after a turnover forced by junior forward
Abbie Smith to cut the deficit to single digits, 63-56.
Lewis capped off the run with a mid-range jumper out of a timeout with 4:51 on the clock, but that was as close as the Maroon and Gray would get as FSU closed out a 10-point win, 74-64.
Even though Morris and senior guard
Skylar Davidson sank three-point baskets in the first quarter, it was Frostburg State that jumped out to a 23-12 lead after a quarter.
As the Bobcats extended their edge to as many as 16 points in the earlygoings of the second quarter, sophomore forward
Madison Young added a three-pointer to bring the score back with single digits, 28-19, with 6:09 remaining in the half. Senior guard
Faith Diggs added a layup off a steal from Davidson to come within seven, 30-23, at 4:43.
However, FSU ended the half strong to go up 45-33 at halftime.
The Mountain Lions started quick out of the break, leading an 8-2 scoring spurt led by Lewis with four points on the run. Concord kept the score close throughout the quarter, but Frostburg State heated up to lead by 14 after three quarters.
Smith led CU with 15 points and grabbed a team-high eight rebounds in the contest. Davidson (12), Morris (11), and Lewis (10) also cracked double figures in the scoring column. To go along with her 12 points, Davidson added five assists and four steals.
The Maroon and Gray return to the Carter Center to face Fairmont State Sunday at 2:00 p.m.
