LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – The Concord University women's basketball team lost 84-67 to Lock Haven in its season opening game as part of the MEC-PSAC Challenge inside Thomas Fieldhouse Friday evening.
Trailing 49-31 deep into the third quarter, CU (0-1) led a 10-0 scoring run to bring the deficit within single digits. Junior forward
Abbie Smith got the rally started with a pair of free throws followed by a three-pointer by graduate forward
Trina Lewis. Smith knocked down another set of free throws and senior guard
Skylar Davidson capped off the scoring spurt with a corner three to being the score to 49-41 with 3:22 remaining in the third.
Later in the quarter, a run out layup off a steal by Davidson cut the deficit to 53-46.
However, seven points was as close as Concord would get as Lock Haven (1-0) built a late advantage to close out the game, 84-67. The Mountain Lions knocked down three three-point shots in the fourth quarter, but could not close in on the Bald Eagles' advantage. For the game, CU shot 47.1 percent (8-for-17) from beyond the arc.
Smith got the season underway with a layup at the 9:24 mark of the opening quarter to get the Maroon and Gray on the board. Junior forward
Imani Hickman connected on the first long-range basket of the season to retake the lead, 7-6, with 4:26 on the clock. However, LHU finished the quarter on a 14-3 run to lead by 10, 20-10, after the first.
The Mountain Lions trailed by double digits throughout second quarter and were still down 35-24 at halftime.
Smith picked up where she left off last winter, notching a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds, going 8-for-8 at the free throw line. Scales also finished in double figures for the first time in her career, scoring 10 points and logging three assists. Junior guard
Carolynn Washington and Lewis led the way defensively swiping three steals each. Davidson added eight points and six assists.
CU faces Seton Hill in the final game of the MEC-PSAC Challenge in Lock Haven, Pa. Saturday at 6:00 p.m.
