ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University football team closed the season with a 63-7 lost to UNC Pembroke Saturday afternoon in a Mountain East Conference at Callaghan Stadium.
UNCP (6-5, 6-3 MEC) scored on its first play from scrimmage to go up 7-0 with 11 minutes remaining in the first quarter. However, the Mountain Lions (1-10, 1-8 MEC) answered on their second drive of the game.
Senior running back
JQ Brown capped an eight-play, 75-yard drive with a 32-yard touchdown tote, his sixth rushing score of the fall. Before Brown's rush, a 16-yard reception from freshman wide receiver
Marcus Striggles pushed the drive into UNCP territory.
The Braves closed the first quarter with a score to open up a 14-7 lead.
Later, in the second quarter, it appeared as though Concord would have an answer as sophomore quarterback
Kameron Howard found junior wide receiver
Jakari Clark for a 78-yard pass play to the UNC Pembroke one-yard line. However, the play was called back on holding.
The momentum shifted enough for the Braves to open up a 28-7 lead at halftime. UNCP expanded the lead to 42-7 after three quarters.
Brown rushed for 98 yards on 21 carries as he just missed his fourth 100-yard rushing game of the season. Striggles caught five passes for 62 yards.
CU's two starting safeties, sophomore
Kendall Bournes (eight) and senior
Khwan Mickens (seven) led the Mountain Lions in tackles as all 15 combined stops were solo. Freshman defensive back
Taurin Kemp racked up five tackles and recovered a second-half fumble for his first career takeaway.
