Concord Loses at West Virginia State

INSITUTE, W.Va. – The Concord University volleyball team dropped a road contest 3-0 to West Virginia State in a Mountain East Conference matchup Tuesdau evening inside the Walker Convocation Center. 
The Mountain Lions fall to 6-9 on the season and move to 1-1 in MEC play. WVSU improves to 7-9 overall and 2-0 in MEC action. WVSU won the match 25-18, 25-16, 25-15

Set 1
Sophomore defensive specialist Allie Davis knotted the game early when she dug an over ball that fell for a kill, 4-4. Then, freshman right side Maddie Stull gave CU the lead 5-4. After WVSU regained the advantage, sophomore outside hitter Chloe Thompson responded to tie the set again, 8-8. Senior middle hitter Kyndra Pilant finished with four kills in the frame, but it was unable to slow down the Yellow Jackets as they took a 1-0 lead.

Set 2
West Virginia State grabbed a 6-2 lead, but it was a kill from Thompson and a service ace from freshman setter Rylee Wise that cut the lead to one, 6-5. Pilant assisted on a pair of blocks midway through the frame as CU trailed by six, 16-10. Sophomore middle hitter Jasmine Anderson swung for three kills in the latter half of the set, but WVSU took a 2-0 advantage by clipping Concord 25-16.

Set 3
Sophomore right side Natalie Brown and Thompson threw in a pair of kills to get the third game underway. Later on, three straight Yellow Jackets errors kept the Mountain Lions within reach, 16-10. Then, Thompson swung for a pair of kills as CU trailed 19-12. Thompson added one more kill in the closing moments of the match as WVSU won, 25-15.

Match Stats
Thompson led Concord with seven kills in the game followed by Pilant with six. Sophomore setter Paige Richmond was the only CU setter with double-digit assists as she compiled 13. Davis collected 20 digs for the fifth straight game and logged her second career kill.
CU plays its first home conference bout of the fall when it hosts Charleston Friday at 7:00 p.m. inside the Carter Center.
