Concord Set for Four-Match Weekend at West Georgia

ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University volleyball team travels to Carrollton, Georgia Friday and Saturday to compete in a five-team non-conference tournament hosted by West Georgia.

CONFERENCE LEADERS
Freshman outside hitter Meg Williams has put the Mountain East Conference on notice, as she leads the MEC with 78 kills through 18 sets. Williams also leads in kills per game with 4.17. Freshman defensive specialist Allie Davis leads the MEC in digs with 101 (5.61 per set) through 18 sets. Senior middle hitters Csayjah Whitelow and Kyndra Pilant rank third and fifth in the conference in blocks, respectively. As a team, Concord ranks first in opponent hitting percentage, holding opponents to just .129.
 
DYNAMIC DUO
In 2023, Concord was tasked with replacing setter Kenzee Chaffin who amassed 809 assists in 2022, good for fifth all-time in CU history. Concord head coach Kate Dillon has called upon two freshman setters, Paige Richmond and Declyn Tooze, to fill Chaffin's role. In the first five matches of the season, Richmond has two career double-doubles and was one dig shy of three at UVa.-Wise. Richmond currently has 108 assists on the season. Tooze ranks seventh in the MEC in service aces with eight. Tooze has served up one ace in every match so far except for UVa.-Wise.
 
PAST MATCHUPS
September 3, 2022 marked the first meeting between Concord and West Georgia. The Wolves traveled to compete in the Concord Classic tournament. Pilant and Whitelow are the only two returning Mountain Lions from the matchup a year ago. Whitelow snagged seven kills, while Pilant added six kills and one block. Concord and Emory & Henry met Tuesday in the Carter Center. The Wasps defeated the Mountain Lions for the first time in five meetings. Williams had a team best 14 kills and hit .281 in the match. Freshman outside hitter Chloe Thompson smashed 12 kills in the match while Davis and Richmond shared 11 digs each.

SCOUTING THE WOLVES
West Georgia returns a trio of hitters in senior outside hitter Zoe LaBreche, sophomore outside hitter Sarah Pipping, and sophomore middle hitter Sanai Young. LaBreche and Pipping have already collected 40 and 35 kills this season, respectively. Young is hitting .395 early in the season and returns off her freshman campaign that placed her second all-time for blocks in a single season at UWG (109). The Wolves welcome rotating setters in sophomore transfer Ashley Barnes and freshman Desha Van Veldhuizen. Both Barnes and Van Veldhuizen have 55 assists on the season.

SCOUTING THE BOBCATS
The Bobcats are hitting .275 through four games this season behind 45 kills from graduate outside hitter Rachel Machovec and 43 kills from freshman right side Rosa Fisher. Assisting the Bobcats in scoring is sophomore setter Reise Johnson who has 110 assists along with six aces. Georgia College has five players with at least 30 digs, headed by sophomore defensive specialist Alanis Bernis with 65 digs. As a team, the Bobcats have recorded 39 blocks which ranks first in the Peach Belt Conference.

SCOUTING THE LADY FALCONS
The Lady Falcons will open their season in Carrollton. Fourth year head coach Tacara Moxey returns a pair of 2022 All-CIAA conference selections sophomore middle hitter Madison Jones and junior setter Sydney Moore. Jones ranked second in the CIAA in hitting percentage (.330) while tallying 177 kills. Moore led the CIAA in aces with 52 and was second in the conference with 526 assists. Other returners include junior outside hitter Fesili Masaniai, junior middle hitter La'Tavia Braynen, and senior outside hitter Tionna Graham.

SCOUTING THE WASPS
Emory & Henry met the Mountain Lions in the Carter Center on Tuesday. In the match, the Wasps hit .298 with help from senior right side Brianna Hogan and junior outside hitter Sophia Kaiser. Hogan picked up 14 kills, while Kaiser had 10. Sophomore setter Peyton Rolfson assisted on 42 points, along with two aces. Senior middle hitter Hannah Watson had seven blocks in the match.
