Concord Comes Up Short at Wheeling

WHEELING, W.Va. – The Concord University football team lost 44-27 at Wheeling Saturday afternoon in a Mountain East Conference game at Bishop Schmitt Field.

Both offenses came out hot as the first quarter featured four touchdowns.

WU (3-1, 2-1 MEC) scored in the first two minutes of the game, but Concord (0-4, 0-3 MEC) needed just four plays and two minutes off the first-quarter clock to answer as senior quarterback Jack Mangel hit senior wide receiver Alvin Howard in stride for a 51-yard strike at the 11:22 mark.

The Mountain Lions stood tall on the next Wheeling possession by getting a sack fumble from junior linebacker Jamari Smith that was recovered by junior defensive lineman Lance Blankenship inside the red zone. However, CU was unable to take advantage as it turned the ball over three plays later.

Down 14-7 with seven minutes remaining in the first quarter, Mangel used a long touchdown strike to knot the game as he hit sixth-year wide receiver Kris Copeland on a 56-yard pass to even the game.

The Cardinals scored twice in the second quarter to take a 28-14 advantage into halftime.

After Wheeling scored six minutes into the third quarter, the Mountain Lions had a response as CU needed just six plays to get back within 14 points at the 6:24. Mangel capped the drive with his third touchdown toss, a 20-yard reception to Copeland.

WU opened the fourth quarter with a safety and tacked on a touchdown on the ensuing drive.

The Mountain Lions did have one more score on the day—a record-breaking one. Under pressure inside the five-yard line, Mangel shoveled a pass to Howard which was Mangel's 72nd career passing touchdown at the 8:09 mark of the fourth quarter.

Mangel finished the afternoon with 345 yards and four touchdowns, both season highs. Copeland went over 150 career receptions with seven catches for 98 yards and two touchdowns. Howard needed just three receptions to amass 66 yards and two scores.

Smith finished with a game-high 13 tackles. Freshman defensive back Kendall Bournes registered nine tackles, graduate defensive lineman Vonte Pannell and junior defensive back Mekhi Williams each had eight stops.

The Mountain Lions host West Liberty 1:00 p.m. September 30.
