Concord Defeated by Charleston

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – The Concord University women's soccer team lost 3-0 to Charleston Wednesday afternoon at the Welch Athletic Complex in a Mountain East Conference contest.

UC (5-0-1, 4-0 MEC) scored in the 14th minute as it took the early advantage.

Concord (2-2-1, 2-1 MEC) had a couple of late opportunities in the first half as freshman midfielder Katie Garratt's free kick landed in the arms of the goalkeeper in the 33rd minute.

Junior forward Sydney Tucker put a shot on goal in the 39th minute, and less than a minute later a turnover in the attacking third gave CU a chance with Tucker one-on-one with the goalkeeper, but the play was whistled offsides.

The first chance for the Mountain Lions in the second half also came on a free kick by Garratt as the shot was frame, but once again saved.

In the 70th minute, Charleston doubled its lead after a giveaway in the midfield that turned into a goal.

Freshman midfielder Wilma Hedenberg and Garratt both had chances in the 71st minute, but the attempts missed the frame of goal.

The Golden Eagles would score again in the 85th minute.

Charleston outshot the Mountain Lions, 16-9. Garratt registered three shots while graduate midfielder Michelle Brogden and Tucker each had two shots.

CU begins a three-game homestand 1:00 p.m. Sunday versus Glenville State at the YMCA Paul Cline Complex in Beckley, West Virginia.
