Concord Falls to Charleston

BECKLEY, W.Va. – The Concord University men's soccer team was downed by Charleston, 2-1, Wednesday afternoon in a Mountain East Conference game at the YMCA Paul Cline Complex.

Charleston (6-1, 4-1 MEC) struck first as it scored in the 16th minute. Trailing for just the second time all season, Concord (1-1-3, 0-1-3 MEC) used a counter attack to level the game in the 39th minute.

With a 3-on-3 transition opportunity breaking out for the Mountain Lions, junior midfielder Fabian Amhof chose to take a shot from 20 yards away himself, and found the back of the net for his fourth goal of the season. The shot took a deflection off a Charleston defender on the way into the net.

Out of halftime, UC scored in the 51st minute after possessing the ball at midfielder and going in for a score inside the 18-yard box.

The best second-half chance for Concord came in the 83rd minute when a ball was played over the top of the Charleston defense from the midfielder area. Junior midfielder Andre Nicholson was able to get behind the back line of UC, but his shot sailed over the crossbar.

Charleston had a 19-6 advantage in shots for the afternoon. Nicholson was the only CU player with multiple attempts in the game as he finished with two.

Sophomore goalkeeper Keegan Grant collected five saves in the contest.

Up next for Concord is road trip to Frostburg State 1:00 p.m. Saturday.
