ERIE, Pa. – The Concord University women's soccer team was unable to hang onto a second-half lead as they fell to nationally-ranked Kutztown 2-1 Saturday afternoon in a neutral-site matchup at McConnell Family Stadium at Gannon University.
After a scoreless first half that saw KU (1-0-1) hold a 9-2 shot advantage, the action picked up in the second half. The Mountain Lions (0-1-1) struck first with a goal from freshman midfielder
Katie Garratt in the 50
th minute.
The edge was maintained for 11 minutes by Concord before Kutztown tied the game at 1-1 in the 61
st minute.
Graduate forward
Alexa Todd had a pair of chances to give the Mountain Lions the lead back as she had a shot go high in the 68
th minute and had another chance saved in the 73
rd minute. Just two minutes later, graduate defender
Jordyn Dansby-Ross had her shot stopped by KU's Cassandra Baker.
Despite the chances by CU, it was the Bears who came up with the decisive goal in the 81
st minute.
Concord was able to get two more shots off in the final six minutes, including a chance on frame by junior midfielder
Leah Fleming in the final 90 seconds.
The second half was more even with Kutztown only owning a 10-7 edge in total shots.
Freshman goalkeeper
Kayla Garza made six saves on the afternoon.
Todd paced the Maroon and Gray with three total shots.
The Mountain Lions will have more than a week off as they next play in the Mountain East Conference opener versus West Virginia Wesleyan 1:00 p.m. September 10.
