Concord Loses to Frostburg State in Extra Innings, Sets Up Elimination Game Versus Charleston Sunday Afternoon

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – The Concord University baseball team dropped a 7-6 decision to Frostburg State in 12 innings at the Mountain East Conference Tournament Sunday morning at GoMart Ballpark.

The contest was a completion of Saturday's suspended game.

Frostburg State (33-19) scored a run in the top of the 12th after a leadoff double and a sacrifice fly two batters later. Concord (29-20) was able to get two runners aboard in the bottom of the 12th after base hits from sophomore infielder Brendan Brady and junior outfielder D.J. Christian Jr., but could not generate the tying run to extend the game.

Trailing 4-0 after the top of the first, CU went to work quickly to reduce the deficit. A one-out walk to graduate outfielder Josh Adkins started a rally that produced a bases-loaded situation. Adkins raced home on a wild pitch with two outs.

In the second inning, another one-out walk sparked the scoring for the Maroon and Gray. Senior catcher Hunter Steel drew the base on balls before sophomore utility MJ Hunter sprayed a single into center field. After a ground-rule double from Adkins brought in Steel, Concord tied the game on a two-run double from graduate outfielder Kyle Keenan.

The line continued to move along as junior infielder Chris Satcher singled into deep left field bringing in Keenan, giving Concord a 5-4 edge.

Christian Jr. came in on a groundout in the third after a leadoff single pushing the lead to 6-4. Frostburg State, however, answered with two runs in the top of the fourth to quickly tie the game.

From there, both pitching staffs were locked in.

After tossing 1.2 innings of scoreless relief, junior pitcher Andrew Neff gave way to sophomore pitcher Rylee Nicholas who went five innings. He struck out seven while surrendering one run on five hits. Nicholas (7-6) was the hard-luck pitcher of record. Nicholas was able to get out of a bases-loaded jam in the ninth and stranded two runners on base in the 10th.

Keenan continued his impressive play in the MEC Tournament by going 3-for-6 with two RBI. Christian bagged two hits. Adkins scored twice to go with his RBI double.

The Mountain Lions play Charleston 4:00 p.m. Sunday at GoMart Ballpark.
