Concord Falls Short at West Virginia Wesleyan

BUCKHANNON, W. Va. – The Concord University softball team was defeated by West Virginia Wesleyan, 8-0 and 5-3, in a Mountain East Conference doubleheader Thursday afternoon at Culpepper Field.

Game 1: West Virginia Wesleyan 8 – Concord 0
The first game of the doubleheader got off to a slow start. Concord (19-32, 10-20 MEC) and Wesleyan (41-12, 24-6 MEC) stayed scoreless until the Bobcats got a run in the bottom of the second.

A three-run home pushed West Virginia Wesleyan in front 4-0 in the third. WVWC added a single run in the fourth and three more in the fifth.

Sophomore outfielder/pitcher Rachael Koller and graduate infielder Sarah Thompson accounted for the CU hits.

Game 2: West Virginia Wesleyan 5 – Concord 3
The story seemed to repeat itself in game two as CU and WVWC went scoreless early on, until Wesleyan got a run across in the bottom of the second inning going up 1-0.

Though Concord had some traffic on the bases early on it wasn't until the fifth that the Mountain Lions got their first runs of the game. Koller stepped to the plate and hit a two-RBI double to left field bringing home sophomore outfielder Kayla McCraw and Thompson taking the lead 2-1. The scoring duo had reached on an error and walk, respectively, earlier in the inning to kickstart the rally.

Wesleyan would answer back in the bottom half scoring four more and regaining the lead 5-2 going into the sixth inning.

Concord wouldn't go quietly in the top of the sixth as freshman catcher Lorelai Ellerby hit a solo home run over the right field wall shortening the lead, 5-3.

CU had some life in the seventh with a lead-off single by sophomore utility Kylee Stacy, but Concord was unable to get a run across the plate.

Junior pitcher Nancy-Jo Roberts (11-14) was the pitcher of record for the Mountain Lions as she tossed five innings, allowing five runs (three earned). She tallied one strikeout.

Stacy was 2-for-3 at the top of the order. Koller and sophomore infielder Courtney Raines each had a double in the game with Koller drive in two runs.

The Mountain Lions conclude the regular season 1:00 p.m. Saturday at Davis & Elkins.
