Concord Defeated by Charleston

Athens W.Va.- The Concord University softball team went up against the University of Charleston in a doubleheader Sunday afternoon dropping both to UC, 14-5 and 7-2, at the CU Softball Field in Mountain East Conference play.

Game 1: Charleston 14 – Concord 5
Charleston (16-4, 10-1 MEC) jumped out in front scoring three runs in the first inning, but CU (11-24, 2-12) answered by plating three of its own in the bottom half. Freshman infielder Lacie Lewis hit a solo shot with one out making it 3-1.

Senior infielder Sarah Thompson followed up with a single into right field and was brought in with a two-run homer hit by sophomore pitcher/outfielder Rachael Koller.

Charleston continued to apply pressure by scoring two more runs in the top of the second inning, and four in the top of the third, 9-3. Concord battled and plated two runs in the bottom of the third. Lewis started it off with a single and was brought around by a second Koller home run making it 9-5.

UC would score another five runs, and Concord was held scoreless through the remaining four innings.

Lewis and Koller ended with two hits each and Koller ended the game with four RBI. Koller has three home runs in the last three games.

Thompson, sophomore outfielder Kylee Stacy, and sophomore infielder Courtney Raines had a hit each.

Sophomore pitcher Caitlyn Bauer (2-8) got the start in the circle for the Maroon and Gray. Bauer went one inning with one strikeout and was relieved by Koller, who threw the next two innings and struck out one batter. Freshman pitcher Sydney Seagraves was Koller's relief in the fourth. Seagraves threw 3.2 innings.

Game 2: Charleston 7 – Concord 2
Charleston had a six-run lead going into the bottom of the sixth when CU fought back. Back-to-back singles to start off the inning by Lewis and Thompson began a rally for the Mountain Lions. With two outs, Freshman infielder Morgan Cline put a ball in play and the UC pitcher was unable to make a clean throw scoring both runners, trimming the lead to 6-2.

Junior pitcher Nancy-Jo Roberts (6-12) entered the circle for the 18th time this season for the Maroon and Gray. Roberts threw her 13th complete game of the year which is four away from top ten in program history. Roberts struck out three while only walking three through seven innings.

Roberts started the game by retiring seven of the first eight hitters she faced before UC scored three runs in the third.

Stacy, Cline, Thompson and Raines ended the game with a hit each while Lewis had her second multiple hit game in a row.
