Concord Loses at Emory & Henry

EMORY, Va. – The Concord University baseball team was unable to overcome an early deficit as it fell to Emory & Henry 12-6 Wednesday afternoon in a non-conference game at Porterfield-DeVault Field.

CU (22-14) jumped in front of Emory & Henry (12-32) three batters into the game as graduate outfielder Kyle Keenan deposited his third home run of the season over the left field fence after back-to-back walks to junior Zack Saryeldin and freshman Dawson Gragg to begin the contest.

The next six runs in the contest belonged to E&H as it scored three runs in the second to overtake the Mountain Lions, 4-3, and added two more tallies in the third.

Junior infielder Chris Satcher broke the momentum with a solo home run, his fifth homer of the year, in the top of the fifth. However, the Wasps responded with two runs in the bottom of the fifth to stretch the lead back out to 8-4.

The Mountain Lions weren't done with the long ball, though, as sophomore pitcher/infielder Rylee Nicholas sent his first home run of the season—and second of his career—out to center field in the top of the sixth. Junior infielder Michael Dupont also scored on Nicholas' long ball after he was hit in the prior at-bat.

The two-run margin was as close as Concord would get as Emory & Henry tacked on four runs in the bottom of the seventh.

Nine different Mountain Lions had a hit in the game, but no one had multiple knocks. Keenan and Nicholas accounted for five RBI.

Freshman pitcher Evan Hosey (0-3) was the pitcher of record as he gave up four runs (two earned) in two innings.

Concord resumes Mountain East Conference play 1:00 p.m. Saturday at West Virginia State.
