Concord Goes 1-1 at Frostburg State

FROSTBURG, Md. – The Concord University softball team split a doubleheader against Frostburg State in a Mountain East Conference matchup Monday afternoon at Bobcat Field, winning 4-3 and losing by the same score.

Game 1: Concord 4 – Frostburg State 3
Going into the seventh inning down 3-1, Concord made a late surge pushing them ahead 4-3.

Down to their last out, graduate infielder Sarah Thompson walked, followed by a single to third base by sophomore outfielder/pitcher Rachael Koller, putting the tying run on first and the go ahead run to the plate. An error by the Frostburg shortstop on the next play allowed Thompson to cross home bringing the score within one. The next batter, freshman catcher Lorelai Ellerby doubled into right center scoring two runs and taking the lead 4-3.

Frostburg State (26-17, 13-11 MEC) looked to answer back in the bottom of the seventh with a lead off double to start the inning. The next three batters were able to be put away by CU.

The Mountain Lions (16-29, 7-17 MEC) scored in the third on a two-out RBI single by Thompson to score senior outfielder Jolie Privett who led off the inning with her own base hit.

Sophomore pitcher Caitlyn Bauer (4-8) got her 17th start and fourth complete game in the circle this season for the Maroon and Gray. Bauer went seven innings giving up two earned runs, while striking out four Frostburg hitters.

Koller, Thompson, and Ellerby all ended the game with multiple hits. Koller finished the day 3-for-3 while Ellerby had CU's only extra-base hit.

Game 2: Frostburg State 4 – Concord 3
Five of the seven runs in the game were scored in the sixth and seven innings as FSU edged Concord in the nightcap.

It wasn't until the top of the third when CU struck first. Freshman infielder Lacie Lewis hit a double to left field. Lewis then stole third base and scored on a throwing error taking the lead 1-0.

Frostburg State answered in the bottom half of the third with a solo home run tying the game 1-1.

The solo home run was the only hit that Koller gave up in the circle in the first five innings as she was able to keep the game deadlocked.

After a two-run home run by Frostburg State in the bottom of the sixth, CU had an immediate answer in the top of the seventh. With one out in the inning, Thompson stepped up to the plate and blasted her fourth home run of the year, a solo shot, bringing the Mountain Lions within one.

A two-out error by the Frostburg State second baseman put freshman catcher Morgan Gleason on first as the tying run. And following a walk to Ellerby, freshman infielder Morgan Cline hit an RBI single to right field scoring Gleason and tying the game 3-3.

The Bobcats got their own RBI single in the bottom of the seventh to clip Concord.

Lewis and Cline ended the day with two hits apiece. Both hits for Lewis were doubles. Privett was a perfect 3-for-3 out of the ninth spot.

Koller (3-7) allowed four runs on four hits while striking out three in 6.1 innings.

Concords will see the field again on April 22 when it faces Notre Dame on the road.
